Cowgirl Softball Wins Two In Rain-Shortened Tournament

Stillwater, Okla. - Oklahoma State's 30th-ranked softball team won both games in a rain-shortened Cowgirl Spring Classic Tournament, with all five games being played on Sunday. OSU defeated Ole Miss, 6-0, before defeating Southwest Missouri State, 6-1, in the final game of the tournament.
Cowgirl sophomore Lauren Bay threw five innings, giving up just one hit as the Cowgirls shut out the Rebels, 6-0. Senior Amanda Hayes had a bases-loaded double that cleared the pads in the five-run second inning.
With runners on first and second, freshman Calli Behmer singled in Bay. Jade Lindly then scored on an RBI groundout by Casey O'Neill, and with two outs, both Danielle Thomas and Jenny Kipp walked. Hayes' double to left center scored all three runners.
OSU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Hayes scored from second on a Bay base hit.
In the last game of the tournament and Oklahoma State's second contest, the Cowgirls scored one in the first and another in the fourth before exploding for four runs in the fifth of a 6-1 victory over the SMS Bears. Senior hurler Sarah Knife Chief threw a complete game, giving up just one run on two hits and six walks.
OSU put its first run on the board in the bottom of the first after Thomas doubled to lead off the inning and after a sacrifice bunt moved her to third and Hayes walked, the duo pulled off the double steal with Thomas scoring.
The Cowgirls added a run in the fourth when Hayes led off with a base hit, and with two outs, Lindly doubled down the leftfield line, scoring Hayes.
One inning later, Oklahoma State scored four runs on four hits, two walks and an SMS error. Southwest Missouri State scored its only run of the game in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly.
Oklahoma State (6-6) will travel to St. George, Utah, next weekend to compete in the Red Desert Classic, hosted by the University of Utah. OSU's opponents will be Stanford, Utah State, Utah, Brigham Young and Cal-Santa Barbara.

Ole Miss 3, Creighton 2
Ole Miss tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on an Amber Slaton double that scored Holly Burris and the Rebels scored two in the bottom of the ninth as Mississippi defeated Creighton, 3-2, in the first game of the OSU Spring Classic. Rebel pitcher Jennifer Hughes had 14 strikeouts in eight complete innings for the win.
Creighton 8, Tulsa 1
Creighton's Shelli Mellegaard scattered eight hits and gave up just one run while striking out nine as the Bluejays defeated Tulsa, 8-1, in the third game of the OSU Spring Classic. Meanwhile, the `Jay offense scored eight runs on nine hits, including five runs off TU starter Amy Van Huss. Tulsa's Christy Watkins went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.
Tulsa 4, Southwest Missouri State 2
Southwest Missouri State committed five errors, leading to four unearned runs for the Golden Hurricane as Tulsa defeated SMS, 4-2, here in the fourth game of the Cowgirl Spring Classic. TU's Jenny magill gave up just two runs, one earned, on four hits in picking up the win. Senior Kari Curtis, a Stillwater, Okla., product, went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
