LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Kirk Hinrich scored 20 points and hit a driving reverse layup that halted an Oklahoma State rally and helped No. 5 Kansas to a 77-61 victory over the Cowboys on Saturday.
Hinrich hit six of his first eight field goal attempts and also assisted in holding Oklahoma State's Maurice Baker to 12 points, 11 below the league-leading average he's had in Big 12 Conference games.
Drew Gooden, a 6-foot-9 sophomore who was averaging almost 16 points and nine rebounds for the Jayhawks (18-3, 8-2), did not play and will miss at least the next three games with a wrist injury.
Eric Chenowith, the 7-1 senior center who had come under criticism for scoring in double figures only twice in his last 11 games, had 17 points and 12 rebounds and went a long way toward helping make up the loss of Gooden.
For Oklahoma State (14-6, 5-4), it was the third game since the Jan. 27 plane crash that took the lives of two players and eight other persons associated with the basketball program. The Cowboys, who had won five of six before the plane crash, are 1-2 since resuming play.
The Cowboys did not score a field goal the final 7:22, getting their last 10 points on free throws.
A 3-pointer by Melvin Sanders and Fredrik Jonzen's free throw sliced Kansas' lead to 51-45 with 12 minutes to go, then Hinrich went in for a dazzling reverse layup that triggered a 12-2 run. Chenowith had four points in the surge, including a 5-foot jumper that made it 63-47.
Oklahoma State never got closer than nine.
Kansas, avoiding its first back-to-back home losses since 1989, got 10 points from Kenny Gregory and Nick Collison.
Sanders and Victor Williams had 13 apiece for Oklahoma State while Jonzen had 11.
