Cowgirl Basketball Tops Spartak Moscow, 83-48

STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's women's basketball team opened the 2001-02 season with a victory in the first of its two exhibition games, cruising to an 83-48 win over Spartak Moscow before 1,153 fans at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Cowgirls (1-0) jumped out to a 12-0 lead before the visitors scored their first basket at the 16:16 mark of the first half. OSU held Spartak (0-6) to 18 first-half points and took a 54-18 advantage into the half-time lockerroom after shooting 46.7 percent (21-of-45) from the floor.
Senior Kara Faulk paced the Cowgirls offensively during the first 20 minutes, coming off the bench to score all 11 of her points in the game on 5-of-6 shooting.
Nikki Lawrence also came up big in the period grabbing 11 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end, to go along with eight points. The senior form Montreal, Can., was one of two Cowgirls to post a double-double on the night with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Fellow senior Tari Cummings had a team-high 17 points to go along with 14 rebounds in her first game in a Cowgirl uniform since the 1999-2000 season.
In the second half, the Cowgirls were slowed down by Spartak's zone defense and finished the period shooting 28. 1 percent, including an 18.2 percent clip from beyond the three-point arc.
Spartak's Lyudmila Sapova scored 15 of her game-high 20 points in the period en route to helping her squad outscore OSU 30-29 in the half.
The Cowgirls will play the Houston Jaguars on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in their final exhibition game before opening the regular season against Tulsa and Oral Roberts next weekend.
