OSU-New Orleans: The Series
Oklahoma State owns the all-time series with New Orleans, 7-3, including a 5-0 mark in Gallagher-Iba Arena. The series started in 1981, with the Cowboys claiming a 94-70 win. The series was sporadic throughout the 1980s, and OSU claimed all three victories in the 90s. The last meeting was on Dec. 4, 1991, when OSU defeated the Privateers, 63-55, in overtime in Stillwater. OSU's average margin of victory in the seven wins has been 13.7, while New Orleans' average margin of victory in its three wins has been 4.7.
Last Time Out For New Orleans
Hector Romero picked up a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Privateers defeated Norfolk State, 61-54, Monday night. Nerijus Lisauskas chipped in 10 points for UNO. The privateers shot 43.5 percent from the floor, including a 6-of-15 clip from behind the three-point arc. The difference in the game came down to free throws: Norfolk State was 9-of-10 from the line, while UNO was 15-of-27. New Orleans turned the ball over 20 times, but outrebounded Norfolk State, 33-25. The Privateers led by five at halftime, 29-24, limiting Norfolk State to just 39.3 percent shooting in the period. NSU did not attempt a free throw in the first stanza.
Cowboys In The Polls
Oklahoma State is currently ranked 12th in the USA Today/ ESPN Coaches Poll and 14th in the Associated Press. OSU is receiving 925 points in the AP poll (80 behind No. 13 Kentucky) and 442 points in the ESPN poll (two behind No. 11 UCLA). Four of Oklahoma State's opponents this season are ranked in the top 25 of both polls (Missouri, Kansas, Fresno State, Ball State), and five more are receiving votes in at least one of the polls. Here is a look at where OSU has ranked in each poll this season.
OSU Dominates Second Half
Despite trailing at some point in the first half of all six games this season, Oklahoma State has dominated the second period. Through two hours of second-half play this season, the Cowboys have trailed for just six minutes. OSU trailed Siena College for 96 percent of that time. The only other game that OSU has trailed an opponent in the second half was last Saturday vs. North Texas, when OSU trailed for the first 17 seconds of the second period.
J?nz?n Moving Up Scoring Chart
Senior forward Fredrik J?nz?n moved into the top 30 in career scoring at Oklahoma State with his 17 points vs. Siena. He now has 917 points in his 3-plus year career, just 83 from reaching the 1,000-point plateau. He needs 23 points to move past Clayton Carter for 29th place and 53 points to move into the top-25 all-time.
J?nz?n Moves Into Top 10 in Rebounds
In one-single game vs. TCU, senior Fredrik J?nz?n moved pass three former players on the career-rebounding charts, surpassing Chianti Roberts, Joe Atkinson and Adrian Peterson. With three more boards vs. North Texas, Fred now has 578 rebounds in his OSU career. He needs just 23 rebounds to move into ninth place, and 185 to move into eighth place on the career rebounding list.
Baker Improves Numbers
One of Coach Sutton's biggest fears prior to this season was that senior guard Maurice Baker would be unable to match his numbers from a year ago, based mostly on the theory that other teams would key on Baker defensively. It apparently hasn't happened yet. Baker is averaging 19 points and eight rebounds per game through six this season, and is also averaging 4.7 assists per contest. Those numbers are comparable to his 19.8 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game average last year. He is also shooting 57.5 percent from the floor, 47.6 percent from behind the arc and 95.2 percent from the free-throw line.
Peaks and Valleys From the Charity Stripe
Five Cowboys are shooting better than 70 percent from the free-throw line. Aaron Hill leads the Cowboys with perfect shooting (2-of-2) from the charity stripe. Maurice Baker is shooting 95.2 percent, with Cheyne Gadson (83.3), Victor Williams (85.2) and Melvin Sanders (70.0) also shooting well. However, OSU also has five players shooting less than 58 percent from the line.
Coach Sutton Reaches Milestone
Oklahoma State's 69-62 win over Cincinnati gave Coach Eddie Sutton his 250th victory at OSU, and his 680th win overall. With his 255 wins at Oklahoma State, he is now just five wins shy of matching his 260 victories while at Arkansas.
Melvin Stealing the Show
Junior guard/forward Melvin Sanders stole the show vs. North Texas. With OSU trailing the Eagles, 37-35, to start the second half, Sanders had three steals in the first 1-1/2 minutes, converting into four fast-break points and giving the Cowboys the lead for good. He finished the game with five steals, tying his career high at Oklahoma State.
Victor Taking Charge
Junior guard Victor Williams took charge in the Siena College game in Las Vegas. He scored eight points in a three-minute span as OSU went on a 20-0 run. This season, Victor is averaging 13.8 points and 3.6 assists per game. He is also shooting 40.0 percent from behind the three-point arc and 85.2 percent from the free-throw line.
Non-Conference Record in Gallagher-Iba Arena
Oklahoma State is 96-1 in non-conference games held in Gallagher-Iba Arena since an 81-75 loss to Missouri Southern on Jan. 7, 1987. The only loss during that span was an 83-81 loss to Florida Atlantic on Dec. 1, 1998, when the Cowboys were ranked 11th in the nation. That loss broke a string of 79-consecutive home non-league wins for OSU. Dating back the last 20 years to 1981, Oklahoma State is 125-7 (.947) in those types of games.
Baker Nearly Records Triple-Double
Senior guard Maurice Baker scored 29 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and dished out eight assists in OSU's 81-58 win over Austin Peay, just two assists shy of his second-career triple-double. Baker had 19 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists vs. Texas-San Antonio last season, jus the second triple-double in OSU history and only the third by a Big 12 player. He now has six-career double-doubles as a Cowboy, 29 double-figure scoring games and 19 20-point games at Oklahoma State.
OSU Post Players Host Block Party
Through the first five games, OSU has blocked 19 shots, and average of 4.8 swats a game. Andre Williams leads the team with six blocks, followed by Fredrik J?nz?n with five, Antoine Broxsie with four, Ivan McFarlin with three and Melvin Sanders with one. Williams had four vs. Cincinnati, and Broxsie had three of his four vs. TCU.
Andre Williams Moves Up Blocked Shots Chart
Oklahoma State junior Andre Williams recorded four blocks vs. Cincinnati, and now has six in five games this season. He has become just the fifth player in school history to reach the century mark in blocked shots in his career. The amazing fact is that he accomplished that feat in just two seasons, the second Cowboy ever to do so. Byron Houston had 131 blocks after his sophomore year, and also owns the all-time career blocked-shots record with 223.
Up Next: Wichita State
Oklahoma State will continue its string of five-straight home games Saturday night as the Cowboys host the Wichita State on Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena. OSU, which owns the series, 28-7, will attempt to avenge a 61-59 loss to the Shockers last year in Wichita.
