COWGIRLS OPEN HOME CONFERENCE SEASON VS. TEXAS TECH
Oklahoma State (8-4 overall, 0-1 Big 12) hosts the Texas Tech Lady Raiders (12-2, 1-0) on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena. OSU is coming off an 81-69 loss at Baylor Wednesday night, while Texas Tech is fresh off an 82-64 win over Missouri at home on Wednesday. The Lady Raiders own the all-time series by a slight 11-10 margin, and the Cowgirls are 6-4 all-time vs. TTU in Stillwater. Oklahoma State is 1-0 in its only home game of the season, a 95-62 victory over West Virginia just a week ago. Texas Tech is 1-1 on the road this season, with a 61-56 loss at Santa Clara just a week ago. TTU is ranked 12th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll and 13th in the Associated Press poll.
COMING UP
Oklahoma State host the Colorado Buffaloes (9-3, 0-1) on Wednesday, Jan. 10, in a 7 p.m. tipoff in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Following that game, the Cowgirls will travel to Austin, Texas, for a game on Saturday, Jan. 13, vs. the Texas Longhorns. Tipoff for the game is set for 5 p.m., and it will be televised by Fox Sports Southwest.
LAST TIME OUT
Baylor's Sheila Lambert scored a game-high 32 points as the Bears defeated the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, 81-69, Wednesday night in the Big 12 Conference women's basketball opener for both schools. OSU's Kara Faulk had a team-high 16 points in the losing cause. Oklahoma State trailed by just two points at 17-15 six minutes into the game as both teams were shooting above 70 percent. However, Baylor scored five-straight points and led by 11, 44-33, at halftime. The Bears took control of the ball game in the second half, forcing 18 Cowgirl turnovers. BU led by as many as 20 at 69-49 before OSU went on a run of its own, led by a barrage of three pointers and eight points by Jessica Spinner. It was not enough, however, as the loss broke a Cowgirl four-game winning streak. Oklahoma State shot 42.2 percent from the floor, compared to 49.2 percent by Baylor. The Cowgirls outrebounded the Bears, 36-24, but could not overcome a 7-of-14 shooting performance >from behind the line by BU. The Bears also made 10 more trips to the free-throw line. OSU had a balanced scoring attack, with four players scoring in double figures. Along with Faulk's 16 points, Spinner scored 13 points, and Jessica Bates and Chantoya Hawkins each pitched in 10 points.
MISCELLANOUS NOTES
In the games vs. SMS, Arkansas, Washington and Wichita State, OSU was averaging eight fewer rebounds than its opponent. In the last four games, the Cowgirls have a +9.0 rebounding advantage, a turnaround of 17 rebounds per contest. ... In the last six games, OSU has had 15 fewer turnovers than its opponents. The Cowgirls had 12 more turnovers than their opponents in the two games prior. ... OSU has won consecutive overtime games for the first time in school history. The Cowgirls are now 10-24 all-time in OT contests.
MORE ON TEXAS TECH
Texas Tech is 10-2 this season and 1-0 in Big 12 Conference play. The Lady Raiders are ranked 12th in the latest USA Today/ESPN Coaches? Poll and 13th in the Associated Press poll. Tech is led by sophomore Plenette Pierson, who is averaging 13.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. She is complemented by freshman Jia Perkins, who is averaging 12.7 points and 4.3 assists from the outside. Junior Amber Tarr is the leading three-point shooter, connecting on 25-of-51 attempts from behind the arc. The Lady Raiders are coached by Marsha Sharp, who is in her 19th season with TTU and has an all-time record of 444-136.
COWGIRLS IN THE RPI
Oklahoma State is ranked 34th in the latest RPI, published by College Basketball News on Jan. 4. In the Big 12, the Cowgirls rank sixth behind Texas Tech (12th), Iowa State (14th), Texas (15th), Oklahoma (17th) and Baylor (30th). The Cowgirls? schedule strength (38th) is the fourth-toughest in the league behind Oklahoma (24th) and Texas Tech (35th) and Nebraska (37th).
HOME NON-CONFERENCE WINNING STREAK EXTENDED
Oklahoma State kept its non-conference winning streak alive for another season, defeating West Virginia, 95-62, and extending the current streak to 21 games. The Cowgirls finished 46-3 in those types of games in the 1990s, and are 74-10 all-time.
PLAYER NOTES
#2 Terrisha Osborn
Terrisha has started the last four games, and is averaging 12 minutes per game. She is averaging 2.1 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest.
#4 Jessica Spinner
Jessica started the first five games for OSU, and is averaging 8.3 points per game. She is second on the team with 35 assists and 16 steals. She was named to the all-tournament team of the Bertha Teague Memorial Classic after a career-high 17 points vs. Tulsa.
#12 Jessica Bates
Jessica is averaging 9.4 points and five rebounds per game. She is shooting 50.5 percent from the floor. She has started 10 of 12 games for OSU.
#20 Shelby Hutchens
Shelby is averaging 6.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. She leads the team in both assists with 37 and steals with 17. She was named to the all-tournament team of the Islander Classic. Shelby had a career-high nine assists vs. Eastern Michigan in the Bahamas.
#22 Kara Faulk
Kara is averaging 10.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. She is 36-of-45 from the line (80 percent). She is also shooting 60 percent from behind the arc. She was named the MVP of the Nassau Sunsplash Shootout after she scored a career-high 24 points vs. Alabama.
#24 Machell Roberts
Machell has started seven games in her first year at OSU, and is averaging 7.2 points per game and 3.6 rebounds per contest. She scored a career-high 14 points vs. Wichita State and had a team-high 12 vs. Southwest Missouri State.
#32 Chantoya Hawkins
Chantoya is averaging 8.6 points per game. She is also averaging 3.3 rebounds per contest. She was named to the all-tournament team of the Islander Classic.
#54 Nikki Lawrence
Nikki is averaging 4.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game off the bench. She is 14-of-20 (.700) ?from the free-throw line. She had a career-high five assists vs. West Virginia.
#55 Trisha Skibbe
Trisha is averaging 7.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. She is shooting 45.2 percent from the floor, and was named to the all-tournament team in the Bahamas. Skibbe has scored in double figures in five games this season, and has eight points in three other games.
COACH DICK HALTERMAN
Dick Halterman is entering his 18th season as the head coach for the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, and brings with him a 309-207 career mark at OSU. Halterman has guided the Cowgirls to eight postseason appearances in the last 12 years, including seven NCAA Tournament appearances (last in 1996) and one Women's NIT appearance (1998). Under Halterman, 13 Cowgirls have been named first-team all-conference, while 31 student-athletes have achieved first-team academic all-conference status. He is a two-time conference Coach of the Year, and was the District V Coach of the Year in 1991. Halterman has taken two conference All-Star teams abroad, including August of 1999, when he led the Big 12 All-Stars on a tour of Finland and Sweden. That team finished with a 5-1 record. COWGIRL BASKETBALL ON THE AIR
Once again during the 2000-01 season, Oklahoma State's basketball games will be broadcast live on KGFY-105.5 FM in Stillwater. Kevin Gum, in his 11th season with the Cowgirl broadcast, will handle play-by-play duties, while Casey Kendrick, in his sixth season on the air, will provide color analysis. For the first time, Cowgirl Basketball will be part of the OSU Radio Network. Member stations will provide statewide broadcasts of as many as 10 games throughout the season. Fans unable to pick up the over-the-air broadcast will be able to listen to the games via the internet at www.okstate.com. Broadcasts will begin 15 minutes prior to tipoff with pregame analysis, as well as interviews with Coach Halterman and various Cowgirl players.
HALTERMAN ON RADIO/TV
During the 2000-01 season, fans can catch up with the Cowgirl head coach on both the radio and television. The Coach Halterman Radio Show will be broadcast on KSPI-93.7 FM in Stillwater on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. The Coach Halterman Television Show will be broadcast Fridays and Saturdays in Stillwater, Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Woodward, as well as on College Sports Southeast regionally. A schedule of airtimes follows. Casey Kendrick, program manager at KWEM, will host both the radio and television shows.
CAPTAINS
Juniors Kara Faulk and Nikki Lawrence were voted on as the captains for the 2000-01 season. Faulk, from Sapulpa, Okla., is in her third year with the program, while Lawrence, a native of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is in her first season at Oklahoma State.
