Oklahoma State's men's tennis team played through heavy hearts on Sunday when they played the University of Texas-San Antonio en route to a 5-1 victory.
The Cowboys played the morning after tragedy struck Oklahoma State. A plane carrying those that traveled to the Oklahoma State basketball game crashed in Byers, Colo. There were 10 people in the plane, all of which died in the crash. The tragedy shocked the whole state of Oklahoma because those on the plane affected the lives of many individuals across the state and the nation.
"This was probably one of the toughest matches to coach," head coach James Wadley said. "With the tragedy that happened on Saturday, you could tell that the kids were down and playing on pure emotion. I was real proud of how they handled themselves."
The Cowboys were nearly flawless, winning in straight sets in each match. Junior Matt Prentice got the Pokes started by defeating Fred Darmont, 7-6, 6-2, at the No. 1 position. Sophomore Eru Lyndon followed suit by defeating Brett Veale 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 position.
Junior Fran Krepelka kept the Cowboys' momentum going with a victory over Max Dounaev, 6-2, 6-0, while Jiri Jezek followed a first-set victory, 6-1, by blanking Max Dimster in the second set 6-0.
The Cowboys were perfect in doubles action, sweeping all three matches. Prentice and Lyndon defeated Darmont and Tom Macquet 8-1. Chris Bates and Krepelka followed the victory by defeating Dounaev and Dimster 8-2. Anthony Zafiris and Jezek rounded up the match by beating Steph Popa and Veale 8-4.
This match moved the Cowboys to 3-0 on the year. The Cowboys will travel to Seattle, Wash., for the National Indoor Championship on Feb. 15.
