SUTHERLAND, New South Wales -- Oklahoma State's Jessica Bates recorded her second double-double during the Australian Tour and the Cowgirls defeated the Sutherland Basketball Club, 61-49, here Monday night in the Woolooware Fieldhouse. Bates had 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in the win.
Mandy Stuber led the Cowgirls with 14 points in a game marred by turnovers. Fifty-two turnovers were committed in a game that was very loosely called by the officials. Nearly half of OSU's 33 turnovers were either called (travelling, over-and-back) or were committed when one of the opponents went over the back, which is not a foul in Australia.
Natalie Hughes and Amy Cruckshark led the Sutherland Club with 12 points each. The Sharks struggled from the floor, shooting just 30.6 percent from the field, including 1-of-9 from behind the three-point arc. Meanwhile, the Cowgirls shot 40.7 percent from the floor, connecting on 24-of-59 shots. OSU also outrebounded Sutherland, 54-33.
Oklahoma State led, 27-22, at halftime, but led by as many as 20 points in midway through the second half.
The Sutherland team consisted of several high school and college-age players from the burrough, but did have one 40-year-old mother, a 28-year-old lawyer and a current member of the Virginia Cavaliers.
Cowgirl Reba Johnson added eight points and eight boards to the OSU cause, while Toya Releford also poured in eight points for the Cowgirls.
Oklahoma State, now 3-1 during its tour of Australia, will play the Cairns Basketball Club on Wednesday, May 17, in Cairns, Australia.
