Cowgirls Defeat McDonald's All-Stars

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Oklahoma State outrebounded the McDonald's All-Stars, 41-16, en route to a 68-55 win here Thursday afternoon, improving its record to 2-0 during its Australian Summer Tour.
Chantoya Hawkins and Jennifer Crow led the Cowgirls with 11 points each, while Devon Magness and Shelby Hutchens each added nine for OSU. Hutchens and Jessica Bates led the team with seven rebounds each. The All-Stars got 18 points from Kelly Lemez, leading all scorers.
The McDonald's squad took an early lead, getting ahead by as many as eight points in the first half. But, OSU went on a run of its own, and by halftime, the score was tied at 30-30.
The All-Stars took another seven-point lead early in the second period, and led by seven with 14 minutes remaining in the game. The Cowgirls took over then, hitting five straight baskets, including two three pointers by Crow, to go up by eight. OSU never trailed again.
The All-Stars' center, 6-5 Marita Payne, had seven blocks in preventing the Cowgirls from getting the ball down low. In reponse, OSU drilled shot after shot from the outside, breaking several full-court pressures.
Both teams were shooting above 50 percent with four minutes remaining, but the All-Stars started missing several key shots and the Cowgirls made their free-throws down the stretch, connecting on 14-of-17 (82.4 percent). OSU finished the game shooting 48 percent from the floor and 40 percent (6-of-15) from behind the three-point arc.
The game, considered low scoring after Wedensday's 103 points, was sped up as the clock was stopped only during substitutions and fouls. The clock was not stopped on out-of-bounds plays.
Oklahoma State will play the Australia Institute of Sport on Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. in Canberra, Australia.
