MELBOURNE, Australia -- Oklahoma State's Cowgirl basketball team won a 103-87 battle with the Victoria All-Stars here Wednesday night, starting off their Australian tour with a win. Approximately 250 fans were in attendance, including several travelling with the OSU squad.
Toya Releford led the way for the Cowgirls with 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor. She also added eight rebounds and had four steals. Jennifer Crow had 19 points off the bench for OSU, on 7-of-9 shooting. Four other players scored in double figures, including Jessica Bates with 15, Jessica Spinner with 11, and Shelby Hutchens and Chantoya Hawkins each with 10.
Bates led the team in both rebounds (seven) and steals (five). Spinner, who is from Australia and was playing in front of her family for the first time as a Cowgirl, added four steals and two blocks.
The game was played with an unusual format for the Cowgirls as the teams played four 12-minute quarters, much like an NBA game. Each player was allowed six fouls, and nobody fouled out.
Oklahoma State took a 23-20 lead after the first quarter, and broke the game wide open in the second period, outscoring Victoria, 31-17, to take a 54-37 halftime lead. The Cowgirls led by as many as 22 points before the All-Stars made a run in the second half and cut the lead to nine midway through the fourth quarter.
Mandy Stuber added five points, four rebounds and three assists, while Devon Magness chipped in nine points, pulled down six boards and had two blocks. Reba Johnson scored three points, had five rebounds and two blocked shots, while Katie Haliburton had two points and a rebound.
Oklahoma State will play the McDonald's All-Stars on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Melbourne at the Keilor Stadium.
