KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The 50th-ranked Oklahoma State men's tennis team was eliminated from the Big 12 Tournament on Friday after dropping a 4-2 decision to the Kansas Jayhawks at the Plaza Tennis Center.
The Cowboys, 11-8 overall and 4-5 in Big 12 play, picked up hard-fought wins at the Nos. 2 and 5 positions from Chris Bates and Jiri Jezek, but suffered three-set losses at the Nos. 1 and 6 positions.
At the No. 2 slot, Bates won the first set in a tie-break and took the third set 6-4 to improve his record to 10-9 on the season.
For the third consecutive match, Jezek required three sets to determine his outcome at the No. 6 position. The freshman defeated KU's Bryan Maier 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 to improve to 14-5 on the season.
The match's outcome hinged on the No. 1 singles contest between OSU's Matt Prentice and KU's Rodrigo Echagaray. Echagaray was able to fight off a match point to edge out the sophomore in the third set to close out the match's scoring.
"They jumped out early and put pressure on us in the doubles matches and we fought back and put pressure on them." Cowboy head coach James Wadley said.
"A lot of the matches went to three (sets) and it came down to the No. 1 singles match. Kansas deserves all the credit for the win."
