Women's Hoops Defeats Kansas State, 67-59

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Oklahoma State took a 25-point lead early in the second half and held off a Wildcat surge as the Cowgirls defeated Kansas State 67-59 here Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the Big 12 Women's Basketball Tournament.
Freshman Chantoya Hawkins led the Cowgirls with 23 points, going 8-of-15 from the floor and 3-of-6 form behind the three-point arc. Junior Toya Releford added 17 points and was one of three Cowgirls, along with sophomore Jessica Bates and senior Jennifer Crow, with nine rebounds.
The normally consistent Crow was just 3-of-13 from the floor and missed her first seven shots. She helped out in other ways, though. Along with her nine rebounds, Crow had seven assists and just two turnovers, and she scored seven of her 10 points in the second period.
OSU took an early 11-10 lead on a layup by Bates, but KSU's Nicky Ramage returned the favor with a layup on the other end. The Cowgirls tied the game at 12 on a free throw by Releford and took the lead for good on her second attempt. The Cowgirls took a 38-21 lead into the locker room when freshman Shelby Hutchens hit a layup as the buzzer sounded off a feed from Crow. OSU then scored the first six points of the second half, taking a 46-21 lead.
The Wildcats cut the lead to six with 2:35 remaining as Kansas State, led by Kristin Rethman and Kim Woodlee, hit six three-pointers in the second stanza, including three in the last five minutes. Even though the Cowgirls only hit two of four free throws in the final 1:34, OSU maintained the lead with a steal and two offensive rebounds.
Oklahoma State (14-15) will play top-seeded Iowa State on Wednesday at noon in Municipal Auditorium.
