Softball Splits Doubleheader With Iowa State

STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Christina Shaddox hit a pinch-hit home run to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning, propelling the Cowgirls to a 3-2 win in the second game of a doubleheader here Friday evening over the Iowa State Cyclones. ISU won the first game, 4-2, in eight innings.
In the first game, ISU took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a double steal, scoring Adrianne Blackmon. The Cowgirls took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning, on back-to-back doubles by Paula Garman and Kirsty Jennings.
The Cyclones tied the score in the fifth when Lisa Frank reached on an error and later scored on a double by Michelle Junod. ISU scored the go-ahead run in the eighth on an RBI single by Cinnamon Gooding. The 'Clones added an insurance run on a base hit by Lauren Cathey for the 4-2 score.
Jennings went 2-for-3 in the game with a double and an RBI. Karla Rivera gave up four runs, three earned in seven innings, dropping to 9-3.
Game two was eerily similar to the first. Oklahoma State took a 2-0 lead in the first on four hits and a double steal. ISU cut the lead in half in the third, when Cathey scored from third on a passed ball. The Cyclones tied the score in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, scoring Frank.
OSU had a couple of scoring opportunities, stranding runners at third in the third, fifth and sixth innings. In the eighth, Iowa State got a runner to second, but pitcher Lauren Bay struck out the next batter.
Christina Shaddox, who was in a car accident two days ago, came to the plate in the bottom of the eighth, and sent the first pitch over the leftfield fence. It was her fourth homer of the season, and the third by a pinch hitter for OSU this year.
Cowgirl Jenny Kipp tied a school record with three stolen bases in a single game, and set the record for consecutive stolen bases. She is now 12-of-12 this season, the previous record was 11, set by Mary Hammen in 1988.
Oklahoma State (25-11 overall, 2-2 in Big 12) will host the Baylor Bears in a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Little Couch Park.
