STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's 20th-ranked softball team swept the Baylor Bears in Big 12 Conference action here Sunday afternoon, winning by scores of 21-11 and 4-0. Senior Shelly Graham went 6-for-8 in the two games with six runs scored.
Baylor took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first in game one before the Cowgirls responded with five runs of their own in the bottom half, four on a grand slam by Amanda Hayes. Oklahoma State scored in every inning, and, after Baylor tied the score at 11-11 in the top of the fifth, OSU scored 10 runs to end the game based on the run rule.
In the game, Graham went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and junior Lezli Leathers went 3-for-4 with four runs and six runs batted in. There were five home runs in the game, including four by OSU, tying a school record. Leathers had two of the dingers, including a three-run round-tripper that ended the game.
The 21 runs by OSU set the school record for runs in a game. The previous record was 20, set by the 1988 squad vs. Southwest Texas and equaled earlier this year vs. Panhandle State.
In the second game, Cowgirl hurler Lauren Bay threw a one-hit shutout, striking out seven en route to her 11th win of the season.
OSU scored one in the bottom of the first when Graham led off with a base hit, one of two in the game for her, and eventually scored on an RBI single by Christina Shaddox. The Cowgirls added three more runs in the fourth, two on RBI singles by Graham and sophomore Jenny Kipp, the third when Leathers stole home.
Oklahoma State improved to 27-12 on the season, and 4-2 in Big 12 Conference action. The Bears dropped to 19-21 this year and 1-3 in league play. The Cowgirls will host the seventh-ranked Oklahoma Sooners on Wednesday, April 5, at 6:30 p.m. Location of the game will be either the new Cowgirl Stadium or Don E. Porter/ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
