Cowboys Host Kansas

Feb. 6, 2000
Monday's Game
Oklahoma State looks to move into the Big 12 Conference lead alone on a
temporary basis -- fellow co-leaders Iowa State and Missouri square off
Wednesday -- when the 13th-ranked Cowboys host No. 15 Kansas on Big Monday.
OSU is embarking on its toughest stretch of the season: Six of OSU's
remaining eight games are against upper-division conference foes, with four
of those six games on the road.
OSU-Kansas: The Series
OSU has lost the last eight meetings between the schools, and the Cowboys'
last victory came five years and one day ago, on Big Monday, Feb. 6, 1995.
The Jayhawks own a 94-57 advantage in the series, including a 31-27 edge in
Stillwater. These schools played the first two games in Gallagher-Iba Arena
history, Oklahoma A&M won 21-15 on Dec. 9, 1938, and 25-19 the next day.
OSU Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at OSU and his 30th
year overall. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to the NCAA Tournament
seven times. Sutton currently owns a career record of 650-254 (71.9 percent)
overall and is 220-90 (71.0 percent) at OSU. Sutton is the only coach to
take four different schools to the NCAA Tournament.

A quick look at Monday's game
OSU has lost eight straight to the Jayhawks and is looking for its first
victory over Kansas in five years and one day ... The Cowboys are currently
locked in a three-way tie atop the Big 12 standings, fellow co-leaders Iowa
State and Missouri square off in Columbia on Wednesday ... The Cowboys are
11-6 in their Big Monday history ... Joe Adkins needs five points to become
OSU's 22nd 1,000-point scorer ... Curiously, most members of both teams
sported newly shaved heads for their Saturday games, OSU against Texas A&M
and Kansas against Texas Tech ... These schools, whose December 1938
matchups were the first two games in Gallagher-Iba Arena (then Gallagher
Hall), on Monday play each other for the last time in the building's current
configuration.
In the polls
Currently ranked 13th by Associated Press and 14th by USA Today/ESPN, OSU
reached a season-high No. 11 position in both the AP and the USA Today/ESPN
ratings before its Dec. 30 loss to LSU. The Cowboys have not been higher
during the regular season since the 1993-94 team climbed as high as No. 8 in
early December. OSU has been ranked in 13 consecutive AP polls, the longest
streak since the 1990-91 and 1991-92 teams were ranked for 24 consecutive
polls, including all 18 in 1991-92, just the fifth time in its history and
the first since 1957-58 that an OSU team had gone wire-to-wire in the polls.

Here's a statistical look at Monday's opponents.

Cowboys back to doing it with defense
The OSU teams of the first half of the 1990s made their name with defense,
holding opponents well below 45 percent in the vast majority of games. That
trend shifted in the second half of the decade -- remarkably, OSU was last
in the Big 12 in field-goal defense in 1996-97 -- although OSU did improve
its ability to force turnovers. This season, OSU seems to have married the
best of both trends, the Cowboys have held 11 opponents under 40 percent
field-goal shooting and have forced more than 20 turnovers in seven games.
OSU leads the Big 12 in field-goal percentage defense (37.5) and three-point
field-goal percentage defense (29.2). Here's a statistical look at OSU
defense in Eddie Sutton's first five years at OSU and in each of the past
five seasons:

Cowboys get revenge on Aggies, roll to victory
Oklahoma State, whose only Big 12 loss is to Texas A&M, made sure the Aggies
would not sweep the season series early in Saturday afternoon's game. The
Cowboys jumped out to a 24-6 lead seven minutes into the lead and coasted
the rest of the way, earning an 87-55 victory. The Cowboys recorded their
highest point total against a Division I opponent since an 89-75 triumph
over UNLV on Dec. 18, and OSU hit a season-high 12 three-pointers, 10 of
those coming from Glendon Alexander and Desmond Mason.
Mason heats up as weather cools down
Senior forward Desmond Mason continues to dazzle game in and game out,
continuing a hot streak that began with his 30-point game against Texas on
Jan. 19. Mason carried OSU in the second half at Texas Tech and finished
with 18 points and 10 rebounds for his third straight double-double. His
double-double streak ended against Texas A&M, but Mason tallied 23 points
and hit four three-pointers in the rout.
Mason is making his mark in several areas of the OSU records book. With 1,465 points in his career, Mason now ranks eighth in OSU career scoring. He also ranks eighth in OSU history in rebounds (720), eighth in steals (139), sixth in blocked shots (78), seventh in three-pointers made (106), seventh in minutes played (3,363), sixth in games started (95) and fourth in double-doubles (21). In Saturday's game against Texas A&M, he broke former teammate Adrian Peterson's school record for consecutive games started with his 90th straight starting nod.
OSU is 9-1 this season and 22-2 in Mason's career when the Waxahachie, Texas, native leads the Cowboys in scoring. Using at least this reckoning, Mason is one of the most important Cowboys in recent memory. Here is a comparison of the last five players to lead OSU in season scoring. The chart lists the player (his years of competition at OSU), the Cowboys' overall record during his career, the team's record in games when he led it in scoring, the team's record in games when he didn't lead it in scoring, and the difference between the last two numbers.

Alexander continues to get hot in spurts
Senior guard Glendon Alexander, who earned his first starting nod of the
season last week at Kansas State, continues to show a knack this season for
scoring bunches of points in short time spans. Alexander scored 10 points in
a two-minute stretch at UNLV, eight points in one minute, 10 seconds at
Washington, 15 points in the last 11 minutes against Texas, and all 10 of
his points against Kansas State in a game-turning four-minute stretch.
Alexander is sixth in school history in career three-point percentage (40.5)
and, despite playing just two years, 10th in three-pointers made (96). His
career-high 25 points against Langston included a career-best seven
three-pointers, the most by an OSU player since Randy Rutherford hit a
school-record 11 against Kansas in 1995. After scoring 25 points again
against Texas A&M -- he went eight-for-nine from the field and six-for-seven
from three-point range -- Alexander has hit at least one three-pointer in 15
consecutive games.
Adkins' scoring prowess returns
Senior guard Joe Adkins had hit for double figures in scoring just once
since the start of the new year heading to Texas Tech. But Adkins showed his
old scoring touch in Wednesday's game as he scored 15 points while hitting
three three-pointers, and he recorded 10 points, eight rebounds and seven
assists against Texas A&M. Adkins is just five points away from becoming
OSU's 22nd 1,000-point scorer. On the OSU career records lists, Adkins ranks
23rd in scoring (995), seventh in assists (383), seventh in steals (141) and
fourth in three-pointers made (154).
Montonati continues consistent offensive output
Senior forward Brian Montonati made a name for himself as a super sub last
season, scoring in double figures 11 times off the bench and doing so five
times in games when he played less than 20 minutes. As a starter for the
first time in his career, he is now one of the Cowboys' most consistent
performers. The only Cowboy besides Mason to start every game, he scored 14
points and pulled down nine rebounds in the victory over Kansas State, and
he had 10 points and nine rebounds against Texas A&M on Saturday. The team's
starting big forward is fourth on the team in minutes but second in scoring
(12.7) and first in rebounding (7.6). Montonati scored a career-high 28
points to go along with 12 rebounds in the Jan. 5 victory over Langston, and
he is fifth in the Big 12 with six double-doubles this season.
OSU holds on for narrow road win over Tech
Trailing by one point with eight minutes to play Wednesday at Texas Tech,
OSU went on a 10-2 run to take a seven-point lead before Texas Tech
recovered to go on an 8-2 run of its own and close OSU's lead to 56-55 with
1:12 to play. But the Cowboys hit seven of eight free throws in the final
minute to withstand the rally and come away with their sixth road victory of
the season. The Cowboys shot just 38.3 percent from the field but held the
Red Raiders to 37.7-percent shooting, and OSU claimed its sixth straight
victory in the series between the schools.
Jonzen earns starting nod, responds well
Swedish native Fredrik Jonzen has started the past seven games after
replacing an ailing Alex Webber, and he showed why in the first half at
Texas Tech. Jonzen scored 10 points and pulled down five rebounds in the
first period. While he recorded just two points and one rebound in the
second half, the two points were vital: He hit both free-throw opportunities
when fouled with 18 seconds left and OSU leading by just two points. He
recorded the best statistical game of his career at Texas A&M on Jan. 22,
scoring 13 points and pulling down a career-best 11 rebounds for the first
double-double of his career. The Swedish import averaged 2.3 points and 2.7
rebounds as a freshman, hitting 46.9 percent of his field-goal attempts and
42.9 percent of his free-throw tries. This season, he's at 9.0 points, 5.9
rebounds, 58.5 percent from the field and 70.9 percent from the line.
Williams back on track after missing five games
Freshman forward Andre Williams missed five games this season during an NCAA
investigation relating to his enrollment at Maine Central Institute last
year. But Williams, cleared Jan. 14 by the NCAA, had his best game since the
suspension Jan. 30 against Baylor. He scored 11 points -- all in the second
half -- while hitting all four of his field-goal attempts and all three of
his free-throw tries (he entered the game as a 36.4-percent foul shooter) to
help the Cowboys avoid a second-period Baylor comeback. The 11-point effort
tied his career high, in his last game before the suspension began, Williams
had recorded an 11-point, 12-rebound performance against Alcorn State on
Dec. 15. Williams tied a career high with four blocked shots against Texas
A&M on Saturday.
Gottlieb moves into all-time top 20 in assists
Senior guard Doug Gottlieb led the nation last season in assists and
recorded the 13th-best single-season assist total in NCAA Division I
history. Already this year, he is well ahead of his school-record assist
average from last season. Gottlieb is currently averaging 9.4 assists this
season, and with 841 assists in his career including one season at Notre
Dame, Gottlieb ranks 15th in Division I history (next on the list is Anthony
Manuel, who recorded 855 assists while playing for Bradley in the late
1980s). His current career average of 7.65 per game ranks 13th on the NCAA
D-I chart. Duke's Bobby Hurley holds the total career assists record with
1,076, and Avery Johnson of Southern set the D-I record for career average
with 12.00 per game. Gottlieb's OSU career total of 687 assists is a Big 12
record, and he owns three of the top five single-season assist totals in the
league's history, his 187 assists this season already rank fifth on the
conference chart.
Other Cowboys can dish it, too
In addition to Gottlieb's prowess as a passer, as well as Adkins' -- this
season marks the only time in school history that two active players have
300 or more career assists -- the entire OSU team has made a name for itself
as a strong passing team in the past couple of seasons. The NCAA
statisticians' manual states that as a rule of thumb, 50 to 60 percent of
field goals should be accompanied by assists. But in 1998-99, OSU's
assist/field-goal ratio was 67.9 percent, compared with 60.7 percent in
1997-98. This season is little different, as 70.3 percent of the Cowboys'
field goals have been assisted. OSU dished out a school-record 36 helpers
against Langston (including assists on the first 15 baskets) and is second
in the nation with 20.1 assists per game.
Up next
Four of OSU's next five games are on the road, and all four are against
big-time Big 12 competition. The Cowboys visit Oklahoma on Saturday and
travel to Texas on Feb. 16. After returning home to face Nebraska on Feb.
19, OSU visits Missouri on Feb. 21 and Iowa State on Feb. 26.
On the air
OSU games will be broadcast on the OSU Radio Network with KWTV's Bill
Teegins handling play-by-play duties and Tom Dirato, OSU coordinator of
radio & TV, providing commentary. Dirato and Teegins are in their ninth year
as the Cowboys' basketball radio team, and Dirato is calling OSU men's
basketball for the 23rd season. The OSU radio network can be accessed
through the Internet (www.okstate.com) or on Teamline. Fans wishing to use
Teamline should call (800) 846-4700 and use team code No. 1750. Use of
Teamline requires a Visa or MasterCard.
Monday's game will also be broadcast nationally on the Westwood One radio network, and OSU will make its second ESPN appearance this year as well. Ron Franklin and Dan Bonner will handle ESPN's commentary duties.
Head Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at his alma mater
with a 220-90 record at the school as well as a 650-254 overall mark in his
30th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to
postseason play in eight of nine years and has won 20 games or more seven
times. Sutton is the 20th coach in Division I history to reach the
600-victory mark, and he is just the seventh coach to reach it in 28 years
or less, joining Denny Crum, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Jerry
Tarkanian and John Wooden.
Only two active coaches (Knight and Tarkanian) rank ahead of Sutton in both victories and winning percentage, and Sutton on Saturday will become the 26th person overall and the sixth active boss to coach 900 NCAA games. Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the national tournament. With Sutton and Henry P. Iba among the 600-win club, OSU is one of only three schools -- joining Illinois and Kentucky -- with two coaches among the all-time top 20.
