Cowboys Look For Revenge
February 04, 2000 | Cowboy Basketball
Feb. 4, 2000
STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State looks to gain a measure of revenge and stay within a half-game of the Big 12 Conference lead when the Cowboys host Texas A&M today. The Aggies pulled off perhaps the league's biggest upset to date when they defeated OSU in College Station two weeks ago today.
OSU-Texas A&M: The Series
OSU leads the all-time series 14-8 and had won eight straight over A&M until
the Aggies' victory last month. OSU's last loss to Texas A&M had come Dec.
18, 1981, in El Paso, the Aggies' last victory over OSU in College Station
had been during the 1923-24 season. But OSU holds a 4-1 edge in games played
in Stillwater, A&M's only victory coming during the 1922-23 season.
OSU Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at OSU and his 30th
year overall. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to the NCAA Tournament
seven times. Sutton currently owns a career record of 649-254 (71.9 percent)
overall and is 219-90 (70.9 percent) at OSU. Sutton is just the seventh
coach to reach 600 coaching victories in 28 or fewer seasons.
A quick look at Saturday's game
OSU will look to avenge its only conference loss, a 64-59 defeat in College
Station on Jan. 22 ... Desmond Mason, who has three straight double-doubles,
will set a school record for consecutive games started if he starts
Saturday. He is currently tied with former teammate Adrian Peterson with 89
consecutive starts ... Eddie Sutton earned the 600th coaching victory of his
college career when the Cowboys defeated A&M 94-62 on Jan. 24, 1998. He will
pick up the 650th win of his career if OSU defeats the Aggies on Saturday
... Joe Adkins needs 15 points to become OSU's 22nd 1,000-point scorer.

In the polls
Currently ranked 13th by Associated Press and 14th by USA Today/ESPN, OSU
reached a season-high No. 11 position in both the AP and the USA Today/ESPN
ratings before its Dec. 30 loss to LSU. The Cowboys have not been higher
during the regular season since the 1993-94 team climbed as high as No. 8 in
early December. OSU has been ranked in 13 consecutive AP polls, the longest
streak since the 1990-91 and 1991-92 teams were ranked for 24 consecutive
polls, including all 18 in 1991-92, just the fifth time in its history and
the first since 1957-58 that an OSU team had gone wire-to-wire in the polls.

Cowboys back to doing it with defense
The OSU teams of the first half of the 1990s made their name with defense,
holding opponents well below 45 percent in the vast majority of games. That
trend shifted in the second half of the decade -- remarkably, OSU was last
in the Big 12 in field-goal defense in 1996-97 -- although OSU did improve
its ability to force turnovers. This season, OSU seems to have married the
best of both trends, the Cowboys have held 10 opponents under 40 percent
field-goal shooting and have forced more than 20 turnovers in seven games.
Here's a statistical look at OSU defense in Eddie Sutton's first five years
at OSU and in each of the past five years:

OSU holds on for narrow road win over Tech
Trailing by one point with eight minutes to play Wednesday at Texas Tech,
OSU went on a 10-2 run to take a seven-point lead before Texas Tech
recovered to go on an 8-2 run of its own and close OSU's lead to 56-55 with
1:12 to play. But the Cowboys hit seven of eight free throws in the final
minute to withstand the rally and come away with its sixth road victory of
the season. The Cowboys shot just 38.3 percent from the field but held the
Red Raiders to 37.7-percent shooting, and OSU claimed its sixth straight
victory in the series between the schools.
Mason heats up as weather cools down
Senior forward Desmond Mason continues to dazzle game in and game out,
continuing a hot streak that began with his 30-point game against Texas on
Jan. 19. Mason carried OSU in the second half at Texas Tech and finished
with 18 points and 10 rebounds for his third straight double-double.
Mason is making his mark in several areas of the OSU records book. With 1,442 points in his career, Mason now ranks eighth in OSU career scoring. He also ranks eighth in OSU history in rebounds (717), eighth in steals (138), sixth in blocked shots (77), eighth in minutes played (3,328), eighth in games started (94) and fourth in double-doubles (21). If he starts Saturday, he will break former teammate Adrian Peterson's school record for consecutive games started with his 90th straight starting nod.
OSU is 9-1 this season and 22-2 in Mason's career when the Waxahachie, Texas, native leads the Cowboys in scoring. Using at least this reckoning, Mason is one of the most important Cowboys in recent memory. Here is a comparison of the last five players to lead OSU in season scoring. The chart lists the player (his years of competition at OSU), the Cowboys' overall record during his career, the team's record in games when he led it in scoring, the team's record in games when he didn't lead it in scoring, and the difference between the last two numbers.

Adkins' scoring prowess returns
After averaging 12.6 points as a sophomore and 10.0 as a junior, senior
guard Joe Adkins has seen his scoring average dip during his senior year,
and the Oklahoma City native had hit for double figures in scoring just once
since the start of the new year heading to Texas Tech. But Adkins showed his
old scoring touch in Wednesday's game as he scored 15 points while hitting
three three-pointers. Adkins is just 15 points away from becoming OSU's 22nd
1,000-point scorer. On the OSU career records lists, Adkins ranks 23rd in
scoring (985), seventh in assists (376), seventh in steals (140) and fourth
in three-pointers made (152).
Jonzen earns starting nod, responds well
Swedish native Fredrik Jonzen has started the past six games after replacing
an ailing Alex Webber, and he showed why in the first half at Texas Tech.
Jonzen scored 10 points and pulled down five rebounds in the first period.
While he recorded just two points and one rebound in the second half, the
two points were vital: He hit both free-throw opportunities when fouled with
18 seconds left and OSU leading by just two points. He recorded the best
statistical game of his career at Texas A&M on Jan. 22, scoring 13 points
and pulling down a career-best 11 rebounds for the first double-double of
his career. The Swedish import averaged 2.3 points and 2.7 rebounds as a
freshman, hitting 46.9 percent of his field-goal attempts and 42.9 percent
of his free-throw tries. This season, he's at 9.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 58.6
percent from the field and 70.9 percent from the line.
Cowboys on cruise control for Baylor victory
OSU shot 53.3 percent from the field in the first half -- Baylor shot 23.3
percent -- and rolled to a 41-19 halftime lead Sunday in Stillwater. OSU
struggled in the second half but was never threatened in earning a 67-51
victory for a season sweep of the Bears. The Cowboys held BU to 26.2-percent
shooting for the game, the lowest mark by an OSU opponent since Drexel shot
25.4 percent in the Cowboys' 1995 NCAA Tournament second-round victory.
Montonati continues consistent offensive output
Senior forward Brian Montonati made a name for himself as a super sub last
season, scoring in double figures 11 times off the bench and doing so five
times in games when he played less than 20 minutes. As a starter for the
first time in his career, he is now one of the Cowboys' most consistent
performers. The only Cowboys besides Mason to start every game, he scored 14
points and pulled down nine rebounds in the victory over Kansas State, and
he had 13 points (all in the first half) and seven rebounds against Baylor.
The team's starting big forward is fourth on the team in minutes but second
in scoring (12.8) and rebounding (7.5). Montonati scored a career-high 28
points to go along with 12 rebounds in the Jan. 5 victory over Langston, and
he is fifth in the Big 12 with six double-doubles this season.
Alexander continues to get hot in spurts
Senior guard Glendon Alexander, who earned his first starting nod of the
season last week at Kansas State, continues to show a knack this season for
scoring bunches of points in short time spans. Alexander scored 10 points in
a two-minute stretch at UNLV, eight points in one minute, 10 seconds at
Washington, 15 points in the last 11 minutes against Texas, and all 10 of
his points against Kansas State in a game-turning four-minute stretch.
Alexander is eighth in school history in three-point percentage (39.1). His
career-high 25 points against Langston included a career-best seven
three-pointers, the most by an OSU player since Randy Rutherford hit a
school-record 11 against Kansas in 1995. Alexander has hit at least one
three-pointer in 14 consecutive games. He scored all nine of his points at
Texas A&M in the second half, including a four-for-four effort from the
free-throw stripe in the game's final 30 seconds.
Williams back on track after missing five games
Freshman forward Andre Williams missed five games this season during an NCAA
investigation relating to his enrollment at Maine Central Institute last
year. But Williams, cleared Jan. 14 by the NCAA, had his best game since the
suspension Sunday against Baylor. He scored 11 points -- all in the second
half -- while hitting all four of his field-goal attempts and all three of
his free-throw tries (he entered the game as a 36.4-percent foul shooter) to
help the Cowboys avoid a second-period Baylor comeback. The 11-point effort
tied his career high, in his last game before the suspension began, Williams
had recorded an 11-point, 12-rebound performance against Alcorn State on
Dec. 15.
Gottlieb moves into all-time top 20 in assists
Senior guard Doug Gottlieb led the nation last season in assists and
recorded the 13th-best single-season assist total in NCAA Division I
history. Already this year, he is well ahead of his school-record assist
average from last season. Gottlieb is currently averaging 9.6 assists this
season, and with 836 assists in his career including one season at Notre
Dame, Gottlieb ranks 15th in Division I history (next on the list is Anthony
Manuel, who recorded 855 assists while playing for Bradley in the late
1980s). His current career average of 7.67 per game ranks 13th on the NCAA
D-I chart. Duke's Bobby Hurley holds the total career assists record with
1,076, and Avery Johnson of Southern set the D-I record for career average
with 12.00 per game. Gottlieb's OSU career total of 682 assists is a Big 12
record, and he owns three of the top five single-season assist totals in the
league's history, his 182 assists this season already rank fifth on the
conference chart.
Other Cowboys can dish it, too
In addition to Gottlieb's prowess as a passer, as well as Joe Adkins' --
this season marks the only time in school history that two active players
have 300 or more career assists -- the entire OSU team has made a name for
itself as a strong passing team in the past couple of seasons. The NCAA
statisticians' manual states that as a rule of thumb, 50 to 60 percent of
field goals should be accompanied by assists. But in 1998-99, OSU's
assist/field-goal ratio was 67.9 percent, compared with 60.7 percent in
1997-98. This season is little different, as 69.9 percent of the Cowboys'
field goals have been assisted. OSU dished out a school-record 36 helpers
against Langston (including assists on the first 15 baskets) and is fourth
in the nation with 19.9 assists per game.
Up next
A brutal second half of the Big 12 Conference schedule begins Monday for OSU
when the Cowboys host Kansas in a Big Monday telecast scheduled to tip off
at 8:07 p.m. After that contest, OSU visits No. 18 Oklahoma next Saturday
and No. 17 Texas on Feb. 16. The Cowboys return home Feb. 19 to face
Nebraska in a 6 p.m. tipoff.
On the air
OSU games will be broadcast on the OSU Radio Network with KWTV's Bill
Teegins handling play-by-play duties and Tom Dirato, OSU coordinator of
radio & TV, providing commentary. Dirato and Teegins are in their ninth year
as the Cowboys' basketball radio team, and Dirato is calling OSU men's
basketball for the 23rd season. The OSU radio network can be accessed
through the Internet (www.okstate.com) or on Teamline. Fans wishing to use
Teamline should call (800) 846-4700 and use team code No. 1750. Use of

Head Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at his alma mater
with a 219-90 record at the school as well as a 649-254 overall mark in his
30th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to
postseason play in eight of nine years and has won 20 games or more seven
times. Sutton is the 20th coach in Division I history to reach the
600-victory mark, and he is just the seventh coach to reach it in 28 years
or less, joining Denny Crum, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Jerry
Tarkanian and John Wooden.
Only two active coaches (Knight and Tarkanian) rank ahead of Sutton in both victories and winning percentage, and Sutton on Saturday will become the 26th person overall and the sixth active boss to coach 900 NCAA games. Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the national tournament. With Sutton and Henry P. Iba among the 600-win club, OSU is one of only three schools -- joining Illinois and Kentucky -- with two coaches among the all-time top 20.
