Oklahoma Travels To Oklahoma State
February 11, 2000 | Cowgirl Basketball
Feb. 11, 2000
COWGIRLS HOST SOONERS - Oklahoma State will host the Oklahoma Sooners for the 63rd meeting between these Bedlam rivals on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 1:05 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Cowgirls are 12-10 overall this season, 4-6 in Big 12 action after a 71-64 loss to Kansas State Wednesday night in Stillwater. OU is 19-3 overall, 9-1 in league play after an 81-56 loss to Iowa State in Ames Tuesday night. The Sooners are ranked 17th in the Associated Press poll, and 22nd in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll.
COMING UP - Oklahoma State will travel to Waco, Texas, on Tuesday, Feb. 15, to face the Baylor Bears (5-15, 0-10). Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. The Cowgirls won the earlier meeting, 75-54, in Stillwater. OSU will then return home for a Feb. 19 contest with the Texas A&M Aggies (10-10, 2-8). The Cowgirls won the earlier meeting this season in College Station, 61-42.
LAST TIME - Jennifer Crow scored a game-high 22 points, but the Cowgirls scored just three points in the first 10 minutes of the second half as OSU fell to the Kansas State Wildcats, 71-64, Wednesday night. Crow, who is averaging over 21 points per game this season, continued her Player-of-the-Year quest with a 22-point, five-rebound, five-assist performance. Sophomore Jessica Bates had a great first half with 10 points and six rebounds, but struggled in the second, fouling out with 7:13 remaining. She did, however, finish with the first double-double of her career with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Oklahoma State got out to an early 4-0 lead, and hit five of its first six shots from the field. The Cowgirls led by as many as eight, 33-25, with 4:54 remaining in the first half. However, KSU went on a 10-0 run to go ahead by two, and trailed by just one, 38-37, at halftime. The second half looked eerily familiar to the Cowgirls, who had struggled to score to start the second period vs. both Missouri and Kansas. The Wildcats outscored OSU, 13-2, to start the half, and led by as many as 12 on three occasions, the last being at the 8:40 mark. Crow hit a three pointer to cut the lead to nine, and after a pair of free throws by KSU?s Nicky Ramage, the Cowgirls scored 13 unanswered points to take a two-point lead. The effort was too much, though, and after a 61-61 tie with 4:25 to go in the game, K-State finished the game on a 10-3 run.
COACH DICK HALTERMAN - Dick Halterman is entering his 17th season as the head coach for the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, and brings with him a 299-197 career mark at OSU. Halterman has guided the Cowgirls to eight postseason appearances in the last 11 years, including seven NCAA Tournament appearances (last in 1996) and one Women's NIT appearance (1998). Under Halterman, 13 Cowgirls have been named first-team all-conference, while 27 student-athletes have achieved first-team academic all-conference status. He is a two-time conference Coach of the Year, and was the District V Coach of the Year in 1991. Halterman has taken two conference All-Star teams abroad, including this past August, when he led the Big 12 All-Stars on a tour of Finland and Sweden. That team finished with a 5-1 record. Here is a look at Halterman's year-by-year coaching record at Oklahoma State.

CROW BACK FOR FINAL SEASON - Jennifer Crow is in her final season in a Cowgirl uniform, and is looking to move up several OSU career statistical charts. She became the 14th player in school history to record 1,000 points in a career, and she currently ranks fourth on the all-time points scored list with 1,630. Jennifer just surpassed Donna Ridling, who was fourth with 1,573 points, and she needs 53 to reach Jamie Siess. She already holds the school record for three-pointers made (195) and attempted (526) in a career. Jennifer was named third-team All-Big 12 last season, and was honored as a second-team Academic All-American her junior year. She ranks seventh in career scoring average at 15.1 ppg, fifth in free-throw percentage at 82.0 percent, and sixth in three-point shooting at 37.1 percent. Another interesting note: Jennifer is just the third Cowgirl to ever average double-figure scoring in all four years of her career. Here is a look at where Jennifer ranks on the school's career charts.

CROW NEARS MARK - Jennifer made three three-pointers in Wednesday's game vs. Kansas State, upping her season total to 54. She is just three treys shy of tying the school single-season mark of 57, set by Alicia Burke in 1988-89. Crow already owns two of the top three marks in school history, and three of the top seven. With 10 attempts from behind the arc, she also surpassed her own mark for three-point attempts in a season, 146 last year. She now has 151 attempts this season.
CROW AT THE LINE - Jennifer Crow set an OSU school record vs. Lamar when she was successful on 12-of-12 trips to the free-throw line. She broke the previous record of 10-of-10, set by Crista Troester in 1983, and duplicated four times since, the most recent time by Cheri Edwards in 1998. One game later vs. Tulsa, Jennifer broke her own record by connecting on 13-of-13 free throws. Crow set another school record from the charity stripe by connecting on 30 consecutive free throws. The previous record was 28, set by Jamie Siess in 1987-88. Jennifer made her last three attempts vs. Illinois, then was a perfect 25-of-25 vs. Lamar and Tulsa. She hit her first two vs. Oral Roberts, but then missed her 31st attempt. She is currently shooting 88.2 percent (120-of-136) from the line. Jennifer also owns two of the top eight single-game free-throw shooting performances in the nation.

SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT - With six rebounds vs. Missouri, Jennifer Crow became just the 10th player in school history to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career. She also became the first player in school history to record 1,500 points, 500 boards, 250 assists and 150 steals in a career. She currently has 1,630 points, 508 rebounds, 260 assists and 166 steals in her four-year career. She is one of just 11 players in the history of the Big 12 schools to reach that milestone.
FRESHMEN DUO GETTING PT - Freshman Chantoya Hawkins has started 19 games this season, while fellow freshman Shelby Hutchens has started 14 contests this year. That's the most starts by a true freshman since 1993-94, when Cheri Edwards started 28 in her first season as a Cowgirl. The last time two true freshmen started at least 14 games was in 1992-93, when Stacy Coffey, Amy Scales and Yogi York started 32, 32, and 31, respectively.
TRIO TAKING CHARGE - After 21 games this season, Oklahoma State has four players averaging at least eight points per game, and three are averaging more than six rebounds per contest. Jennifer Crow leads the team in scoring, averaging 21.1 points per game, including a career-high 34 vs. Colorado. She is also averaging 6.2 rebounds per contest. Junior Tari Cummings is averaging 17.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, including careers highs in points (33) and rebounds (15) vs. Washington. Sophomore Kara Faulk is averaging 8.2 ppg and 7.8 boards per game, while freshman Chantoya Hawkins is averaging 10.7 points per contest.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES -
Junior Reba Johnson pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds at Colorado on Saturday. That's the most since Kelly Folsom grabbed 16 caroms at Texas on Feb. 8, 1997.
Freshman Shelby Hutchens has scored at least eight points on seven occasions this season, including a career-high 22 points vs. Baylor in 21 minutes of play.
Sophomore Emily Lanie scored her first point as a Cowgirl vs. Baylor. A walkon a year ago, Lanie earned a scholarship this season and the BU game was her first action of the season. She played in three games last season.
Sophomore Mandy Stuber scored 13 points in OSU's win over Texas. She had only 10 in her first two games combined.
Oklahoma State has used 12 different starting lineups this season. The only constant has been senior Jennifer Crow.
