Cowboys Look For Season Sweep Of Red Raiders

STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State looks for a season sweep of Texas Tech when the Cowboys visit the Red Raiders on Wednesday. The Cowboys, coming off a lackluster 67-51 victory over Baylor on Sunday, are looking to keep pace with the top of the Big 12. OSU is one-half game out of first place and is one of three league teams with just one conference loss. OSU will be playing for the first time in Tech's new United Spirit Arena.
OSU-Texas Tech: The Series
Sweeps have been the rule in this series since the inception of Big 12 play
in the 1996-97 season. The Red Raiders won both games that year, but OSU,
which leads the all-time series 14-6, has won all five since, including a
55-47 triumph in Stillwater earlier this year. The series is tied 2-2 in
games played in Lubbock, OSU won in overtime in 1998 and won 69-55 last
season.
In the polls
Currently ranked 13th by Associated Press and 14th by USA Today/ESPN, OSU
reached a season-high No. 11 position in both the AP and the USA Today/ESPN
ratings before its Dec. 30 loss to LSU. The Cowboys have not been higher
during the regular season since the 1993-94 team climbed as high as No. 8 in
early December. OSU has been ranked in 13 consecutive AP polls, the longest
streak since the 1990-91 and 1991-92 teams were ranked for 24 consecutive
polls, including all 18 in 1991-92, just the fifth time in its history and
the first since 1957-58 that an OSU team had gone wire-to-wire in the polls.

OSU Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at OSU and his 30th
year overall. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to the NCAA Tournament
seven times. Sutton currently owns a career record of 648-254 (71.8 percent)
overall and is 218-90 (70.8 percent) at OSU. Sutton is just the seventh
coach to reach 600 coaching victories in 28 or fewer seasons.

Cowboys back to doing it with defense
The OSU teams of the first half of the 1990s made their name with defense,
holding opponents well below 45 percent in the vast majority of games. That
trend shifted in the second half of the decade -- remarkably, OSU was last
in the Big 12 in field-goal defense in 1996-97 -- although OSU did improve
its ability to force turnovers. This season, OSU seems to have married the
best of both trends, the Cowboys have held nine opponents under 40 percent
field-goal shooting and have forced more than 20 turnovers in seven games.

Cowboys on cruise control for Baylor victory
OSU shot 53.3 percent from the field in the first half -- Baylor shot 23.3
percent -- and rolled to a 41-19 halftime lead Sunday in Stillwater. OSU
struggled in the second half but was never threatened in earning a 67-51
victory for a season sweep of the Bears. The Cowboys held BU to 26.2-percent
shooting for the game, the lowest mark by an OSU opponent since Drexel shot
25.4 percent in the Cowboys' 1995 NCAA Tournament second-round victory.
Montonati continues consistent offensive output
Senior forward Brian Montonati made a name for himself as a super sub last
season, scoring in double figures 11 times off the bench and doing so five
times in games when he played less than 20 minutes. As a starter for the
first time in his career, he is now one of the Cowboys' most consistent
performers. The only Cowboys besides Mason to start every game, he scored 14
points and pulled down nine rebounds in the victory over Kansas State, and
he had 13 points (all in the first half) and seven rebounds against Baylor.
The team's starting big forward is fourth on the team in minutes but second
in scoring (13.2) and first in rebounding (7.8). Montonati scored a
career-high 28 points to go along with 12 rebounds in the Jan. 5 victory
over Langston, and he is fifth in the Big 12 with six double-doubles this
season.
Mason heats up as weather cools down
Senior forward Desmond Mason suffered through a slump just after Christmas,
scoring just 20 points in OSU's first three Division I games after the
team's holiday break. But Mason has been unconscious since then, beginning
with his 30-point effort against Texas on Jan. 19. In the next three games,
Mason averaged 24.0 points while hitting 26 of 41 (.634) field-goal
attempts, 10 of 20 (.500) three-pointers and 10 of 11 (.909) free throws. He
recorded his first Division I double-double in nearly two months with a
23-point, 10-rebound effort at Kansas State last Wednesday and followed it
up with a 10-point, 10-rebound game against Baylor. As Mason goes, so seem
to go the Cowboys: OSU is 8-1 this season and 23-2 in his career when Mason
leads the team in scoring.
Mason is making his mark in several areas of the OSU records book. With 1,424 points in his career, Mason now ranks 10th in OSU career scoring. He also ranks eighth in OSU history in rebounds (707), eighth in steals (137), sixth in blocked shots (76), eighth in minutes played (3,290), eighth in games started (93) and fourth in double-doubles (20). If he starts Wednesday, he will tie former teammate Adrian Peterson's school record for consecutive games started with 89.
Alexander continues to get hot in spurts
Senior guard Glendon Alexander, who earned his first starting nod of the
season in Wednesday's game at Kansas State, continues to show a knack this
season for scoring bunches of points in short time spans. Alexander scored
10 points in a two-minute stretch at UNLV, eight points in one minute, 10
seconds at Washington, 15 points in the last 11 minutes against Texas, and
all 10 of his points against Kansas State in a game-turning four-minute
stretch. Alexander is eighth in school history in three-point percentage
(39.0). His career-high 25 points against Langston included a career-best
seven three-pointers, the most by an OSU player since Randy Rutherford hit a
school-record 11 against Kansas in 1995. Alexander scored 11 points against
Baylor on Sunday.
Williams back on track after missing five games
Freshman forward Andre Williams missed five games this season during an NCAA
investigation relating to his enrollment at Maine Central Institute last
year. But Williams, cleared Jan. 14 by the NCAA, had his best game since the
suspension Sunday. He scored 11 points -- all in the second half -- while
hitting all four of his field-goal attempts and all three of his free-throw
tries (he entered the game as a 36.4-percent foul shooter) to help the
Cowboys avoid a second-period Baylor comeback. The 11-point effort tied his
career high, in his last game before the suspension began, Williams had
recorded an 11-point, 12-rebound performance against Alcorn State on Dec.
15.
Midway run helps OSU pull away from KSU
Desmond Mason and Glendon Alexander scored 23 points during the last 6:20 of
the first half and the first 2:30 of the second period as OSU used a 25-8
run to pull away for a road victory at Kansas State last Wednesday. The
Cowboys' starting front line garnered 26 rebounds, and the team's
point-guard tandem combined for 16 assists as OSU improved to 4-1 in
conference play.
Jonzen moves into starting lineup
Forward Fredrik Jonzen entered his sophomore season with no career
double-digit scoring performances. But Jonzen has hit for 10 or more points
seven times this season and has started the past five games. He recorded the
best statistical game of his career at Texas A&M on Jan. 22, scoring 13
points and pulling down a career-best 11 rebounds for the first
double-double of his career. The Swedish import averaged 2.3 points and 2.7
rebounds as a freshman, hitting 46.9 percent of his field-goal attempts and
42.9 percent of his free-throw tries. This season, he's at 8.9 points, 5.9
rebounds, 59.3 percent from the field and 70.3 percent from the line.
Adkins' amazing clutch shooting shows up again
Senior guard Joe Adkins earned OSU's "Mr. Clutch" award last season after
hitting numerous late three-pointers in close games. In the first game
against Texas Tech, Adkins showed he still has that ability this season. The
Oklahoma City native was two-for-11 from the field and one-for-six from
three-point range in the first 39 minutes of the victory over the Red
Raiders. But with 1:08 remaining, OSU's lead down to six points and the shot
clock at two seconds, Adkins hit an off-balance three-pointer over Tech
center Andy Ellis to ice the victory. Adkins finished with 10 points in the
game and moved ever closer to the 1,000-point barrier. On the OSU career
records lists, Adkins ranks 23rd in scoring (970), seventh in assists (374),
seventh in steals (138) and fourth in three-pointers made (149). He had an
impressive line against Texas: Six points, seven assists, a
career-high-tying eight rebounds, five steals and one turnover in 34 minutes
of action. Against Kansas State, Adkins was one point and one assist away
from a double-double with nine points and nine assists. He did not start
against Baylor, no thanks to a stomach ailment, but played 13 minutes in the
victory.
Gottlieb moves into all-time top 20 in assists
Senior guard Doug Gottlieb led the nation last season in assists and
recorded the 13th-best single-season assist total in NCAA Division I
history. Already this year, he is well ahead of his school-record assist
average from last season. Gottlieb is currently averaging 9.7 assists this
season, and with 828 assists in his career including one season at Notre
Dame, Gottlieb ranks 16th in Division I history (next on the list is Pooh
Richardson, who recorded 833 assists while playing at UCLA in the late
1980s). His current career average of 7.67 per game ranks 13th on the NCAA
D-I chart. Duke's Bobby Hurley holds the total career assists record with
1,076, and Avery Johnson of Southern set the D-I record for career average
with 12.00 per game. Gottlieb's OSU career total of 674 assists is a Big 12
record, and he owns three of the top five single-season assist totals in the
league's history, his 174 assists this season already rank fifth on the
conference chart.
Other Cowboys can dish it, too
In addition to Gottlieb's prowess as a passer, as well as Joe Adkins' --
this season marks the only time in school history that two active players
have 300 or more career assists -- the entire OSU team has made a name for
itself as a strong passing team in the past couple of seasons. The NCAA
statisticians' manual states that as a rule of thumb, 50 to 60 percent of
field goals should be accompanied by assists. But in 1998-99, OSU's
assist/field-goal ratio was 67.9 percent, compared with 60.7 percent in
1997-98. This season is little different, as 69.8 percent of the Cowboys'
field goals have been assisted. OSU dished out a school-record 36 helpers
against Langston (including assists on the first 15 baskets) and is fifth in
the nation with 20.3 assists per game.
Charting the Cowboys against the Red Raiders
In these teams' first meeting in Stillwater on Jan. 8, OSU shot a season-low
35.6 percent from the field but used excellent defense and a strong inside
game to defeat Texas Tech 55-47. OSU's three-man frontline rotation of
Jonzen, Montonati and Alex Webber combined to score 35 points and grab 26
rebounds while the defense held the Red Raiders to 35.2-percent field-goal

OSU will be back home Saturday looking for revenge against Texas A&M, the
only Big 12 team to defeat the Cowboys so far this season. After that
contest, the Cowboys' toughest stretch of the season begins. OSU hosts No.
15 Kansas on Feb. 7 in an 8 p.m. Big Monday game and then visits No. 18
Oklahoma on Feb. 12 and No. 16 Texas on Feb. 16.

Head Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at his alma mater
with a 218-90 record at the school as well as a 648-254 overall mark in his
30th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to
postseason play in eight of nine years and has won 20 games or more seven
times. Sutton is the 20th coach in Division I history to reach the
600-victory mark, and he is just the seventh coach to reach it in 28 years
or less, joining Denny Crum, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Jerry
Tarkanian and John Wooden.
Only two active coaches (Knight and Tarkanian) rank ahead of Sutton in both victories and winning percentage, and Sutton on Saturday will become the 26th person overall and the sixth active boss to coach 900 NCAA games. Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the national tournament. With Sutton and Henry P. Iba among the 600-win club, OSU is one of only three schools -- joining Illinois and Kentucky -- with two coaches among the all-time top 20.

Wichita State, keeping OSU close to set up a late run to victory ... hit

Oklahoma State will play its home games in a construction zone this year as
massive Gallagher-Iba Arena renovations get into full swing. Here is a quick
look at the facts of the construction:
Facility name: The arena itself will continue to be called "Gallagher-Iba
Arena," but the entire facility is currently known as "The OSU Athletic
Center."
