OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Washington's Kellie O'Neill scored a game-high 20 points and the Huskies halted a late rally by Oklahoma State as the Cowgirls fell to UW, 66-59, here Sunday afternoon at the Freede Center on the OCU campus.
Washington took an early 8-0 lead in a game in which it never trailed. By the 14-minute mark of the first half, the Huskies had taken an 11-point lead, 16-5. Oklahoma State cut the lead back to three at 19-16 midway through the first period, and trailed by just two with 1:43 remaining in the half. A pair of baskets put UW ahead, 35-30, at the intermission.
In the first six minutes of the second stanza, Washington went on a 16-2 run and took a 19-point lead, the biggest of the game. In that span, Oklahoma State missed 11-of-12 field-goal attempts, including four layups. The Cowgirls missed nine point-blank shots in the game.
"Tonight was the best we've executed an offense all year," said OSU Coach Dick Halterman. "We had the best shots we've had all year long ... and we shot 29 percent. Until somebody starts knocking the shots down, we're going to struggle with the competition that we've got from here on out."
OSU went on an 18-6 run of its own over the next 11 minutes, including 11 free throws. However, the Huskies scored twice and hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 2-1/2 minutes to preserve the win despite a pair of three-pointers by Jessica Spinner and a trey by Machell Roberts at the buzzer that made the score respectable.
Spinner led the Cowgirls with 11 points and seven rebounds, while freshman Trisha Skibbe also scored in double figures with 10 points. Shelby Hutchens, Roberts and Jessica Bates each chipped in nine points.
Oklahoma State (4-3) will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 9, as the Cowgirls host Wichita State in the Mabee Center in Tulsa at 2 p.m.
