STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl Basketball program announced today that Julie Dawson, a member of the Daily Oklahoman's Super 5 team last season, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play collegiately at OSU.
"Julie is their team," said OSU coach Dick Halterman. "What we like about her is her toughness and her work ethic. There's now doubt in my mind that she will be the hardest worker we've ever had."
Dawson, who helped lead Arnett to the state championship as a sophomore, averaged 22.3 points and 8.9 rebounds last season for the Class B state semifinalist. She also averaged 2.1 assists, 4.2 steals and 2.3 blocked shots for a team that finished 27-4. Dawson shot 57 percent from the floor and 78 percent from the free-throw line.
"I pretty much just followed my gut feeling," said Dawson when asked why she chose OSU. "I've always been a Cowgirl since I was little, and its where my heart told me to go."
In her three-year career at Arnett, Dawson has 1,853 points, 801 rebounds 374 steals, 206 blocks and 190 assists. She was named to the first-team Blue Chip list last season, and was a second-team honoree after her sophomore year. She's also a two-time member of the Class B All-Tournament team.
"She is one of the best all-around players in the state," said Arnett coach Scott Friesen. "If she isn't one of the top five in the state, then we must have some great players who are being overlooked by colleges."
Dawson is considered by many as the top high school girls' player in the state of Oklahoma. She is also a member of the Canadian (Texas) rodeo team, and is interested in trying out with the OSU rodeo squad.
"She's a six-foot kid that can go out and shoot the three and can go in and bang around for the rebound," said Halterman. "Her mental and physical toughness are the two most important attributes she has."
Dawson was recruited by several Division I schools, and chose Oklahoma State over Texas, Texas Tech, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
