Thursday's Game
Oklahoma State competes in its final exhibition tuneup for the regular season when the Cowboys square off against the California Midwest All-Stars at Oral Roberts University's Mabee Center. OSU is playing its first several games away from Gallagher-Iba Arena while the building's expansion is completed.
About the Cowboys
On the heels of an Elite Eight season that saw the graduation of seven Cowboy seniors, OSU's 2000-01 roster includes 10 newcomers, the most since 1991-92. Oklahoma State returns just 17.4 percent of its scoring from last season, the smallest amount since 1992-93, the year after the senior class of Byron Houston, Sean Sutton and others.
OSU Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 11th year at OSU and his 31st year overall. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to the NCAA Tournament seven times. Sutton currently owns a career record of 659-259 (71.8 percent) overall and is 229-95 (70.7 percent) at OSU. Sutton is the only coach to take four different schools to the NCAA Tournament.
About the California Midwest All-Stars
Thursday's game concludes the California Midwest All-Stars' 12-game fall tour of U.S. universities. The team has won twice on its tour -- at Massachusetts and at Northwestern -- and looks to former Boise State star Roberto Bergerson as its leading scorer at 18.9 points, although Cal's Michael Gill has topped 25 points twice.
Cowboys fall to Athletes First in opener
Chad Wilkerson and Tim Gill combined for 62 points as Athletes First held off a furious rally to defeat Oklahoma State 96-95 Thursday, sending the Cowboys to their first exhibition loss since 1988. Wilkerson hit six three-pointers and scored 32 points to help Athletes First build a lead as big as 14 points in the second half before Maurice Baker's 27-point effort keyed an OSU rally that saw the Cowboys cut the lead to a single point before the final gun.
Baker keys OSU comeback in debut
Point guard Maurice Baker, making his OSU debut along with a host of Cowboy newcomers in last week's exhibition opener, shined offensively in leading the Pokes back from a 14-point second-half deficit. The Madison, Ill., native hit 10 of 19 field-goal attempts and three of five three-point tries while also handing out seven assists and pulling down six rebounds.
J?nz?n renews scoring touch
Junior forward/center Fredrik J?nz?n had his usual quietly solid game against Athletes First. The Swedish import, whose NCAA Tournament performance a year ago earned him nationwide recognition, hit half of his 14 field-goal attempts, scoring 16 points and pulling down nine rebounds. J?nz?n is the only Cowboy who has started an OSU game prior to this year.
Sanders hits for double figures in Cowboy opener
Junior-college transfer Melvin Sanders joined teammates Baker, J?nz?n and Andre Williams in hitting for double figures in the exhibition opener. Sanders scored 13 points in the game, hitting 6 of 12 field-goal attempts, and led the Cowboys with two steals.
Gallagher-Iba Arena officially sells out
The new Gallagher-Iba Arena isn't even complete yet -- it's due to open for Commencement on Dec. 16 -- and it's already sold out for men's basketball. The OSU POSSE office announced this week that all 13,611 seats in the building are spoken for, and it has started a waiting list for fans still hoping to purchase ducats for the 2000-01 and future seasons. Interested parties may call the POSSE office at (405) 744-7301 or (877) 2-B-POSSE.
On the air
OSU games are broadcast on the OSU Radio Network with KWTV's Bill Teegins handling play-by-play duties and Tom Dirato, OSU coordinator of radio & TV, providing commentary. Dirato and Teegins are in their 10th year as the Cowboys' basketball radio team, and Dirato is calling OSU men's basketball for the 24th season. The OSU radio network can be accessed through the Internet (www.okstate.com) or on Teamline. Fans wishing to use Teamline should call (800) 846-4700 and use team code No. 1750. Use of Teamline requires a Visa or MasterCard.
Noting the Cowboys
Bernard Kidd has not yet been cleared for full practice after suffering a knee sprain in September ... Ivan McFarlin will sit out the season as a partial qualifier. McFarlin will be eligible in 2001-02, and if he completes graduation requirements in four academic years, he will regain his fourth year of competition in 2004-05 ... Because of a grade change from his time as a student-athlete at Minnesota, Antoine Broxsie is academically ineligible for the first semester this season ... Coach Eddie Sutton underwent LASIK surgery in Tulsa three weeks ago.
Head Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 11th year at his alma mater with a 229-95 record at the school as well as a 659-259 overall mark in his 31st year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to postseason play in nine of 10 years and has won 20 games or more eight times. Sutton is the 20th coach in Division I history to reach the 600-victory mark, and he is just the seventh coach to reach it in 28 years or less, joining Denny Crum, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Jerry Tarkanian and John Wooden.
Only one active coach (Tarkanian) ranks ahead of Sutton in both victories and winning percentage, and Sutton is the 26th person overall and the fifth active boss to coach 900 NCAA games. Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the national tournament. With Sutton and Henry P. Iba among the 600-win club, OSU is one of only three schools -- joining Illinois and Kentucky -- with two coaches among the all-time top 20.
