COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl basketball team won its first conference game of the season Saturday afternoon with a 61-42 win over the Texas A&M Aggies here before 1,613 fans in Reed Arena.
Junior Toya Releford led a balanced Cowgirl attack, scoring a game-high 15 points. Senior Jennifer Crow added 13, as did freshman guard Chantoya Hawkins.
Texas A&M tied the score at 23-23 on a jumper by LaToya Rose with 2:10 remaining in the first half. But, OSU went on a 4-0 run to end the period, including a layup by Cowgirl Mandy Stuber off a dish by Hawkins.
Oklahoma State continued its run in the second period, rolling off nine unanswered points and leading by 13 before Brandy Jones finally hit a shot for A&M at the 14:51 mark. The Cowgirls led 47-33 with 6:15 to go, and OSU scored its final 14 points off free throws.
Cowgirl junior Kara Faulk, who was questionable Friday afternoon with a hip flexor strain, picked up six points and eight rebounds in 22 minutes.
The Aggies leading scorer was Kera Alexander with 11 points, while Prissy Sharpe led all players with 15 rebounds. The OSU defense held A&M's two leading scorers, Sharpe and Jaynetta Saunders, to just 12 points between the two of them. They average 32.
"If you had told me before the game that we were going to shoot 33 percent, turn the ball over 22 times, and get outrebounded, I wouldn't have thought we would've won," said OSU coach Dick Halterman.
"It's always great to get that first win in conference especially on the road," continued Halterman. "I thought it would be a game that went down to the wire. Defensively we were as good as we've been all season."
Oklahoma State (9-4, 1-0 Big 12) will host the Texas Longhorns (10-4, 2-0) on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
