STILLWATER, Okla. - Cowgirl freshman Shelby Hutchens scored a game-high 22 points and was perfect on the night, hitting 9-of-9 shots from the floor and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line, as Oklahoma State defeated Baylor, 75-54, here Saturday night before 1,927 fans in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Hutchens, a Stillwater product, hit not only layups, but also connected on two three-pointers in just 21 minutes of play off the bench. Senior Jennifer Crow added 17 points for the Cowgirls, and led the team with eight rebounds.
Oklahoma State never trailed in the game, scoring a bucket at the 18:44 mark on a jumper by Crow. The Cowgirls led by 17 at halftime, 38-21.
Baylor scored the first four points of the second half on a layup and a steal and layup on the inbounds pass. OSU gradually increased the lead, ahead by as many as 27 points with 3:33 remaining in the game. The Cowgirls played the final two minutes without any starters in the game, and gave up just three points in the process.
'Our kids were ready to play,' said OSU Coach Dick Halterman. 'That's what we tried to emphasize to them all week long. We're just not good enough to look past anybody. The kids came in tonight and played with a lot of effort early on.'
Hutchens shooting performance was the best in the Big 12 Conference this season, and her 22 points were the most by a true freshman since Crow scored 25 vs. Nicholls State in 1996.
'It just happened,' said Hutchens, when asked about her performance. 'I didn't do anything special. Its just easier when you don't have to start. There's less pressure (coming off the bench). There is really nothing you have to do except contribute when you come off the bench.'
Oklahoma State (11-6 overall, 3-2 Big 12) will travel to Austin, Texas, to play the Texas Longhorns on Wednesday, Jan. 26. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
