In the polls
Currently ranked 12th in both major national polls, OSU reached a
season-high No. 11 position in both the AP and the USA Today/ESPN ratings
before its Dec. 30 loss to LSU. The Cowboys have not been higher during the
regular season since the 1993-94 team climbed as high as No. 8 in early
December. OSU has been ranked in 11 consecutive AP polls, the Cowboys were
also ranked 11 straight weeks last season, a streak that was the longest
since the 1990-91 and 1991-92 teams were ranked for 24 consecutive polls,
including all 18 in 1991-92, just the fifth time in its history and the
first since 1957-58 that an OSU team had gone wire-to-wire in the polls.
Wednesday's game will be OSU's first against an AP Top 25 team this season.
The Cowboys are 23-30 against ranked teams during Eddie Sutton's tenure at
OSU, losing nine of their last 11 such games.

Cowboys back to doing it with defense
The OSU teams of the first half of the 1990s made their name with defense,
holding opponents well below 45 percent in the vast majority of games. That
trend shifted in the second half of the decade -- remarkably, OSU was last
in the Big 12 in field-goal defense in 1996-97 -- although OSU did improve
its ability to force turnovers. This season, OSU seems to have married the
best of both trends, the Cowboys have held eight opponents under 40 percent
field-goal shooting and have forced more than 20 turnovers in seven games.
Here's a statistical look at OSU defense in Eddie Sutton's first five years
at OSU and in each of the past five years:
Year(s) FG Defense TO forced 1990-95 41.3 13.3 1995-96 45.1 17.3 1996-97 44.7 12.7 1997-98 44.4 17.4 1998-99 42.3 16.3 1999-2000 37.8 19.7
Cowboys ride defense to victory over Baylor
Although OSU scored under 60 points for the second straight game, the
Cowboys held Baylor to 41 points, a Big 12-record low for conference games,
and won by 15 Saturday in Waco. OSU's offense struggled -- the Cowboys
scored just three field goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half --
but the Pokes still shot 48.9 percent from the field while holding Baylor to
31.4 percent. The Bears' leading scorer, Tevis Stukes, was limited to just
five shots and five points.
Gottlieb moves into all-time top 25 in assists
Senior guard Doug Gottlieb, known for his prowess as a passer, played an
unfamiliar part in a birthday performance at Baylor. A career 37-percent
shooter from the field, Gottlieb hit six of seven shots in Waco and scored
13 points to lead OSU in scoring for just the second time in his career. His
three-pointer with just over 12 minutes to play stopped the Bears' most
significant rally and was part of a stretch when Gottlieb, who was
celebrating his 24th birthday, scored seven of nine OSU points. That scoring
outburst came 10 days after he tallied a career-best 18 points in a Jan. 5
victory over Langston. In the past three games, Gottlieb has shot 16-for-24
(66.7 percent) and averaged 11.7 points.
Gottlieb led the nation last season in assists and recorded the 13th-best single-season assist total in NCAA Division I history. Already this year, he is well ahead of his school-record assist average from last season. Gottlieb has 139 assists in the first 14 OSU games of the year, with 793 assists in his career, Gottlieb ranks 20th in Division I history. His current career average of 7.63 per game ranks 13th on the NCAA D-I chart. Duke's Bobby Hurley holds the total career assists record with 1,076, and Avery Johnson of Southern set the D-I record for career average with 12.00 per game.
Jonzen provides inside punch off the bench
Forward Fredrik Jonzen entered his sophomore season with no career
double-digit scoring performances. But Jonzen has hit for 10 or more points
six times this season, including in each of the past two games. He scored 10
points and hit five of seven field-goal attempts against Texas Tech,
combining with Webber to shoot 67 percent from the field while the rest of
the team shot 24 percent. The Swedish import averaged 2.3 points and 2.7
rebounds as a freshman, hitting 46.9 percent of his field-goal attempts and
42.9 percent of his free-throw tries. This season, he's at 9.0 points, 5.8
rebounds, 60.6 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from the line.
Mason continues to move up the charts
Senior forward Desmond Mason is making his mark in several areas of the OSU
records book. With 1,342 points in his career, Mason now ranks 11th in OSU
career scoring. He also ranks eighth in OSU history in rebounds (677), 11th
in steals (131), seventh in blocked shots (71), ninth in minutes played
(3,143), eighth in games started (89), fourth in consecutive games started
(84) and fourth in double-doubles (18). Mason scored 22 points and pulled
down a career-high 15 rebounds in the victory over Langston.
Montonati continues consistent offensive output
Senior forward Brian Montonati made a name for himself as a super sub last
season, scoring in double figures 11 times off the bench and doing so five
times in games when he played less than 20 minutes. As a starter for the
first time in his career, he is now the Cowboys' most consistent performer:
He's the only Cowboy to score in double figures in every game this season.
The team's starting big forward is fourth on the team in minutes but second
in scoring (14.2) and first in rebounding (8.3). Montonati scored a
career-high 28 points to go along with 12 rebounds in the Jan. 5 victory
over Langston, and he is third in the Big 12 with six double-doubles this
season.
OSU wins ugly in league opener
Oklahoma State shot a season-low 35.6 percent from the field but used
excellent defense and a strong inside game to defeat Texas Tech 55-47 in
Stillwater on Jan. 8. OSU's three-man frontline rotation of Fredrik Jonzen,
Brian Montonati and Alex Webber combined to score 35 points and grab 26
rebounds to lead the Cowboys while the defense held the Red Raiders to 35.2
percent field-goal shooting.
Adkins' amazing clutch shooting shows up again
Senior guard Joe Adkins earned OSU's "Mr. Clutch" award last season after
hitting numerous late three-pointers in close games. Against Texas Tech,
Adkins showed he still has that ability this season. The Cowboys' starting
two-guard was two-for-11 from the field and one-for-six from three-point
range in the first 39 minutes of the victory over Texas Tech. But with 1:08
remaining, OSU's lead down to six points and the shot clock at two seconds,
Adkins hit an off-balance three-pointer over Tech center Andy Ellis to ice
the victory. Adkins finished with 10 points in the game and moved ever
closer to the 1,000-point barrier. On the OSU career records lists, Adkins
ranks 24th in scoring (946), seventh in assists (354), 12th in steals (130)
and fourth in three-pointers made (145).
Alexander's quick scoring triggers key second-half runs
The Cowboys' sixth man, senior guard Glendon Alexander, displayed his
well-known ability to score points in bunches in OSU's December games on the
West Coast. In both games, with OSU trailing, his rapid-fire scoring keyed
game-turning runs for the Cowboys. Against the Runnin' Rebels, he scored 10
points in two minutes to lead a 14-0 run that gave OSU the lead for good, in
Seattle, he hit for eight in one minute and 10 seconds as OSU scored 11
straight to defeat the Huskies. His career-high 25 points against Langston
included a career-best seven three-pointers, the most by an OSU player since
Randy Rutherford hit a school-record 11 against Kansas in 1995.
Other Cowboys can dish it, too
In addition to Gottlieb's prowess as a passer, as well as Joe Adkins' --
this season marks the only time in school history that two active players
have 300 career assists -- the entire OSU team has made a name for itself as
a strong passing team in the past couple of seasons. The NCAA statisticians'
manual states that as a rule of thumb, 50 to 60 percent of field goals
should be accompanied by assists. But in 1998-99, OSU's assist/field-goal
ratio was 67.9 percent, compared with 60.7 percent in 1997-98. This season
is little different, as 68.5 percent of the Cowboys' field goals have been
assisted. After dishing out a school-record 36 helpers against Langston
(including assists on the first 15 baskets), OSU is third in the nation with
20.9 assists per game.
Charting the Cowboys against the Longhorns
Although OSU is 2-6 against Texas since the inception of the Big 12
Conference, the victories have been memorable. OSU's 1997-98 win in
Stillwater, with Mason recording 27 points and 14 rebounds, clinched the
mythical South Division championship, and last year's Big 12 Tournament
meeting was the game that assured OSU's berth in the NCAA Tourney. Here's a
look at current Cowboys' career statistics against Texas:

On the air
OSU games will be broadcast on the OSU Radio Network with KWTV's Bill
Teegins handling play-by-play duties and Tom Dirato, OSU coordinator of
radio & TV, providing commentary. Dirato and Teegins are in their ninth year
as the Cowboys' basketball radio team, and Dirato is calling OSU men's
basketball for the 23rd season. The OSU radio network can be accessed
through the Internet (www.okstate.com) or on Teamline. Fans wishing to use
Teamline should call (800) 846-4700 and use team code No. 1750. Use of
Teamline requires a Visa or MasterCard.
Wednesday's game will be televised on the ESPN Regional network, including KJRH (channel 2) in Tulsa and KOCB (channel 34) in Oklahoma City. Dave Armstrong and Paul Splittorff will handle on-air duties for the TV broadcast.
Noting the Cowboys
An MRI on Monday revealed that senior center Alex Webber has a
bulging disc in his lower back. Webber's status is questionable for
Wednesday's game, and his recovery is day-to-day.
OSU welcomes Brian Farr back to Gallagher-Iba Arena on Wednesday. Farr is currently the athletic trainer with men's basketball at Texas, he served in a similar capacity at OSU for two full seasons before heading south earlier this year.
OSU came within two points of its single-game scoring record in a 125-65 victory over Langston on Jan. 5. Montonati (28), Alexander (25) and Gottlieb (18) each recorded career scoring highs in the victory, and Mason (22 points, 15 rebounds) recorded a rebounding personal best. The game marked the first time in six years that an OSU team had three players score 20 points in the same game.
Williams returns to OSU roster
Oklahoma State forward Andre Williams was reinstated to the school's
basketball squad late last week by the NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement
Committee. Williams missed five games of the current season while OSU
officials and the NCAA discussed eligibility questions stemming from his
enrollment at a prep school (Maine Central Institute). The committee
determined that Williams' conditions for reinstatement would include just
the games he has already missed this season and paying $5,000 to a charity
over the next four years. The freshman from Kansas City, Kan., had his best
game as a Cowboy in the last game before the eligibility issue surfaced, he
recorded 11 points and 12 rebounds in a victory over Alcorn State on Dec.
15. Against Baylor last week in his first game back, Williams played 10
minutes with two rebounds and one blocked shot.
Head Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at his alma mater
with a 215-89 record at the school as well as a 645-253 overall mark in his
30th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to
postseason play in eight of nine years and has won 20 games or more seven
times. Sutton is the 20th coach in Division I history to reach the
600-victory mark, and he is just the seventh coach to reach it in 28 years
or less, joining Denny Crum, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Jerry
Tarkanian and John Wooden.
Only two active coaches (Knight and Tarkanian) rank ahead of Sutton in both
victories and winning percentage, and only one other coach -- TCU's Billy
Tubbs -- joins OSU's boss in having won coach-of-the-year awards in four
different leagues. Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and
Kentucky, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools
to the national tournament. With Sutton and Henry P. Iba among the 600-win
club, OSU is one of only three schools -- joining Illinois and Kentucky --
with two coaches among the all-time top 20.

player since Bryant Reeves had 20 against Kansas in 1995 ... career-high 28
points against Langston ... only Cowboy to score in double figures every
game this year ... 14 points, 14 rebounds against Texas Tech ... 18 points
in exhibition opener ... scored in double figures 11 times last year, five
coming when he played under 20 minutes.
#24 - Rodney Sooter - 6-2 - 190 - Sr. - G
Saw his first action this year against Idaho, also saw the floor against
Arkansas-Little Rock, North Texas, Texas-San Antonio, San Diego State and

Coach Lonnie Spencer ... three-time all-conference and -district performer
at Miami (Okla.) High School.
#45 - Alex Webber - 6-10 - 270 - Sr. - C
Currently dealing with a bulging disk in his lower back, questionable
Wednesday ... went scoreless for the first three games of 1998-99 but would
have none of that this season, scoring OSU's first points of the year 34
seconds into the Appalachian State game ... 20 points against Wichita State,
keeping OSU close to set up a late run to victory ... hit nine of 11
field-goal attempts against the Shockers while the rest of the team shot 27
percent ... 11 points against Texas Tech, hitting five of seven FGs while
the rest of the team hit 31 percent from the field ... 12 points, including
a five-for-five effort from the field, against North Texas ... led OSU in
field-goal percentage last year and is on pace to do so this season.

Has become a crowd favorite with his active, spirited play ... missed five
games relating to his enrollment at Maine Central Institute but was cleared

Appalachian State, becoming the first freshman ever to record double-digit
rebounds in an OSU season opener ... seven points, eight rebounds at UALR
... blocked three shots in five minutes of playing time against Global
Sports ... the team's best leaper -- can reach 11-7.
Victor Williams - 5-10 - 170 - So. - G
Illinois State's starting point guard as a freshman and named the top
freshman in the MVC ... began his career with a stellar performance against
Oakland with 19 points, seven rebounds and seven steals ... came into his
