STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl basketball team failed to score in the final 5-1/2 minutes of the first half and fell behind by as many as 22 before falling to the eighth-ranked Iowa State Cyclones, 76-64, here Tuesday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Cowgirls hung with ISU through the first 15 minutes of the game, leading by as many as four at 20-16. But, the Cyclones turned up the heat and scored nine unanswered points to end the half ahead, 38-29. OSU senior Jennifer Crow, who picked up her second foul just five minutes into the game, sat out the final two minutes and watched Iowa State make the run from the bench.
ISU scored the first two points of the second half to increase the run to 11 before Toya Releford pitched in her first points of the game on a jumper from the baseline. Iowa State and OSU traded baskets until the 14:16 mark, when the Cyclones went on a 21-8 run over the next eight minutes to increase the lead to its largest at 22.
The Cowgirls made the score respectable in the final four minutes, connecting on three of their school-record 11 three pointers. The previous record was 10, set in 1998.
Crow and freshman Chantoya Hawkins led the Cowgirls with 15 points each, followed by Mandy Stuber's 13. Both Stuber and Hawkins each had three treys, while Crow and freshman Shelby Hutchens each hit two.
Iowa State was led by center Angie Welle, who scored 13 of her game-high 17 points in the second half. Cyclone Megan Taylor added 15 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, while Stacy Frese and Tracy Gahan each added 14.
"The thing that concerns me more than anything is our transition defense," said OSU Coach Dick Halterman. "You can't turn the ball over or miss a shot and give up a layup on the other end. We've got to be good enough in transition to make them set up and run an offense."
The Cyclones outscored OSU, 13-0, on second-chance points, thanks to a 20-rebound margin. ISU had 45 boards, compared to just 25 for OSU.
Oklahoma State (10-6 overall, 2-2 Big 12) will host the Baylor Bears on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
