HELSINKI, Finland - Oklahoma State's Devon Magness recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds while four other players scored in double figures in the Big 12 All Stars' 100-70 victory over the Helsinki Panthers here Tuesday evening.
Missouri's Tracy Franklin added 13 points, while Iowa State's Megan Taylor and Oklahoma's Phylesha Whaley each scored 12. Kansas' Jaclyn Johnson poured in 11 points.
"We were getting good passes inside, and the post (players) really dominated," said Magness. "They were a small team, so it was easier to go get the lobs. It's been a while since I've played well due to my injuries, but once I warmed up, it seemed easier for me to do what needed to be done."
The Helsinki squad held with the All-Stars until the 15-minute mark, when the Panthers trailed by only two at 13-11. But, the Big 12 slowly pulled away, leading by as many as 20 with 4:15 remaining in the first half. Helsinki cut the lead to 15 on two free throws by Minna Pietikainen, but Texas Tech's Melinda Schmucker drove the length of the court and hit a layup at the buzzer. vFranklin had nine points at halftime on 3-of-4 shooting from behind the three-point line. The All-Stars finished with eight treys, setting the tone for the game.
"Last game, we got off to a rough start and got down today early," said Franklin. "This game, we wanted to come out strong from the start and get a bid lead."
The Panthers cut the lead to 13 early in the second half, but the Big 12 dominated Helsinki with fastbreaks. When the All-Stars did get into a halfcourt offense, they scored at will inside. Taylor scored several baskets on easy layups off screens.
Texas A&M's Prissy Sharpe and Nebraska's Cori McDill led the team with five assists, and Baylor's Nicole Collins picked off four steals.
The Big 12 All-Stars (3-1) will take Wednesday off to travel to Stockholm, Sweden, before playing the Norrkoping Flamingos in a 7 p.m. game on Thursday night.
