STILLWATER, Okla. Oklahoma State's Jennifer Olival went 5-for-7 and pitcher Sarah Knife Chief threw a five-hit shutout as the OSU softball team swept the Baylor Bears, 5-3 and 2-0, here Saturday afternoon in brisk temperatures.
In the first game, the top third of the Cowgirls lineup went 9-for-12 with four runs scored. Olival went 3-for-4 with two runs, while All-American Jaime Foutch went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI and catcher Michelle Singer went 3-for-4 with a run batted in. As a team, OSU combined for 12 hits off Baylor hurler Stacey Allison, who pitched both complete games.
BU got on the board first, scoring a run with two outs. With Naomi Fitzgerald on third, Mary Hess reached on an error by third baseman Amanda Hayes, allowing Fitzgerald to scored. OSU went ahead in the bottom of the inning, when Foutch doubled over the head of Fitzgerald in centerfield, scoring Olival from second. Foutch then scored on a base hit by Melissa Turley.
Baylor made a run at it in the fourth. With one out, Lyn Hill walked, and advanced to second on a base hit by Ryan Stukel. Shadie Sickles hit a high fly ball over the head of Olival, but the speedy centerfielder made a fine catch over her shoulder, and threw Hill out at second for the double play.
The Bears pulled within one run in the fifth on a two-run home run off the bat of Mary Hess, the cleanup hitter. OSUs Sarah Knife Chief came on in relief of Sheryl Anderson, and struck out Misty Perry to end the threat. The Cowgirls added a run in the sixth on a bloop single by Singer with two outs and runners on second and third. Knife Chief picked up her first save of the season, throwing 2-1/3 scoreless innings.
In game two, the only runs of the game came in the bottom of the third. Olival singled with one out, and reached second when Combe dropped the scoop throw from Tori Birk at second on a fielders choice. Foutch followed that with a double that dropped 15 feet from the fence along the left field chalk.
Knife Chief continued her scoreless drive, throwing a complete-game shutout. She allowed just five hits and walked one while striking out three, improving her record to 9-10. Olival went 2-for-3 in the game with a run scored.
Oklahoma State (18-21 overall, 4-7 Big 12) is scheduled to host the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Sunday in a noon doubleheader. The Red Raiders were leading Oklahoma, 4-1, after 5-1/3 innings when a rain delay suspended the end of the game.
