Softball Advances to Bracket Play at Classic

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team won all three games of pool play here at the AirTouch Cellular Capital Classic . OSU defeated Sacramento State, 4-3, late Thursday night before defeating Indiana State, 5-1, and Ohio, 7-2, on Friday to advance to bracket play.
In the game vs. Sacramento State, OSU scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh when Hornet centerfielder Arlette Sunseri committed two errors on the same play, allowing both runs to score. Sac State took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but OSU responded, scoring one in the bottom of the inning and another in the third to tie the score. The Hornets score the go- ahead run in the fifth on a solo home run, before the Cowgirls won the game in the seventh.
Kristine Garcia, Melissa Turley and Casey O'Neill each had two hits for Oklahoma State, including two doubles for O'Neill. Sarah Knife Chief threw a complete game, scattering six hits while striking out six in picking up her seventh win of the season.
In game two, OSU scored a run in each of the first three innings, and added two in the sixth for the 5-1 score. Freshman Jessica Jenkins threw a complete game, scattering three hits while striking out nine Sycamore batters. Shelly Graham, Michelle Singer and Melissa Turley each had two hits.
In the third game of the pool, the Cowgirls took a three-run lead in the top of the third and never trailed as OSU won for the third straight game. OSU took advantage of six walks issued by Ohio pitchers and used timely hitting to score two runs in the fourth and two more in the seventh. Sheryl Anderson pitched five innings to pick up the victory.
Oklahoma State (11-11) is scheduled to play Southern Illinois in the first round of bracket play at 9 p.m. CST. Win or lose, the Cowgirls will play Saturday at 1 p.m. CST. Other teams advancing to the championship bracket include Michigan, Oregon, Iowa and Nebraska.
