SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team lost its first game of bracket play, but advanced with a win over Nebraska here Saturday afternoon in the Capital Classic. OSU lost to Southern Illinois, 8-7, in a controversial game early this morning, but defeated Big 12 Conference rival Nebraska, 3-2.
In a game that started Friday night, OSU led Southern Illinois, 7-3, after three innings. It started to rain, but the umpires decided to continue play. SIU scored five runs in the top of the fourth, on two hits, two hit batsmen and a walk, taking an 8-7 lead on a bases-loaded double. The game was called mid-inning, and continued on Saturday morning. Freshman Jessica Jenkins gave up just one hit in the remaining five innings, but OSU failed to score.
In the game vs. Nebraska, the Cowgirls took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but trailed, 2-1, entering the sixth inning. OSU scored a run in the top of that inning to tie the game. With one out in the seventh and runners on first and third, Jennifer Olival hit an RBI groundout off NU All-American Jenny Voss, scoring Shelly Graham. Graham went 2-for-3 in the game with a double, while Melissa Turley went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Jenkins threw a complete game for the win.
Oklahoma State (12-12) was scheduled to play Oregon at 9 p.m. CST. A win would advance the Cowgirls into a 11 a.m. CST semifinal game on Sunday.
