SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team lost a 10-2 decision to the Oregon Ducks here late Saturday night in bracket play of the Capital Classic, eliminating the Cowgirls from competition. Oklahoma State finished the tournament with a 4-2 record.
OSU took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Shelly Graham singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kristine Garcia, and scored on a base hit by All-American Jaime Foutch. With two outs, Foutch scored on an RBI single by Casey O'Neill, who was named to the all-tournament team.
The Cowgirl pitching staff couldn't stop the bats of Oregon, though, as the Ducks responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, then took a 4-2 lead in the second. The game was called after a six-run fifth inning by UO, giving the Ducks an eight-run lead.
Graham went 2-for-2 in the game, while Jennifer Olival had the Cowgirls' only extra-base hit with a double.
"We played very well this weekend," said OSU Assistant Coach Kim Ward. "The win over Nebraska was huge, and the only two losses of the weekend were to a ranked opponent (Oregon) and a controversial loss early Saturday morning. This is a good time in the season for these players to get focused (heading into conference play)."
Oklahoma State (12-13) will return to action on Wednesday night as the Cowgirls travel to Wichita, Kan., for a single game with the Shockers starting at 5:30 p.m. OSU opens Big 12 Conference action on Saturday, Mar. 20, as the Cowgirls entertain Kansas for a doubleheader starting at noon.
