LINCOLN, Neb. - Oklahoma State's softball team split a doubleheader with the Nebraska Huskers, defeating NU, 6-5 in the first game before falling in the second, 3-2. The victory gave the Cowgirls their first conference win of the season.
In the first game, OSU scored three runs in the top of the first, and took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh. However, the Huskers used four walks by Cowgirl hurler Sheryl Anderson and a double by Leigh Suhr to score three runs before OSU got an out. Anderson then forced the next to batters to fly out, as NU scored on each sacrifice fly. Kelly Pinkepank then grounded out to Anderson to end the game.
The Cowgirls scored their three runs in the first off two hits and two Husker errors. OSU had bases loaded and just one out, but back-to-back groundouts ended the scoring barrage.
Oklahoma State added two more in the second when Shelly Graham led off with a single and scored on a base hit by Jaime Foutch. Foutch then scored on a throwing error after reaching third on a sacrifice bunt. The Cowgirls' final run came when Liz Silva batted in Melissa Turley, who tripled with one out in the top of the fifth.
In game two, All-American Jenny Voss limited OSU to just two runs, both in the first, and Pinkepank redeemed herself by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. The Cowgirls scored both runs on a one-out home run by Foutch in the first with Kristine Garcia on base. Nebraska scored one in the second and added one in the fourth before a base hit to left field by Ginger Taylor scored Pinkepank from third with two outs.
"It was disappointing that we split, but we were certainly happy with the win," said OSU Assistant Coach Kim Ward. "We had some outstanding performances today, however, in game two, when we needed clutch hitting, it just wasn't there."
Oklahoma State (15-17 overall, 1-3 Big 12 Conference) will return to action next weekend as the Cowgirls travel to Austin and College Station, Texas, to face ranked opponents in the Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies. Both doubleheaders will begin at noon.
