AUSTIN, Texas - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team lost two heartbreakers here Saturday afternoon to the 15th-ranked Texas Longhorns, losing the first game, 1-0 in eight innings, before falling in the second, 2-1. UT won both games in its final at-bat.
"It is very disheartening to lose two games that were so close to a nationally-ranked team," said OSU Assistant Coach Kim Ward. "Our girls played their hearts out, and its very sad for them to lose games like this."
In game one, OSU's Sarah Knife Chief got into a pitching duel with UT All-American Christa Williams. Both threw shutouts through seven innings, with Knife Chief throwing a no-hitter through 6-1/3 innings before cleanup hitter Keely Franks hit a single to left field.
In the bottom of the eighth, Audrey Hendricks led off with a double, followed by a double off the bat of All-American Nikki Cockrell, scoring Hendricks with the winning run.
In the second game, Texas took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when pinch hitter Kathleen Richter hit a double to right field with a runner on third. Jane Teixeira led off the inning, got on base and went all the way to third thanks to two Cowgirl errors on the play.
OSU responded in the top of the sixth with a run of its own. Leadoff hitter Shelly Graham started the inning with a base hit, and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jennifer Olival. She reached third on a wild pitch by UT's Charla Moore, who then walked OSU's All-American Jaime Foutch. Graham scored when Foutch was thrown out at second attempting to steal.
Texas won the game and swept the doubleheader in the bottom of the seventh when, with two outs and runners on first and second, Franks drove the ball down the rightfield line, scoring Cockrell.
"Our kids played extremely well," said Ward. "There were just some times when we needed some key hits, and they weren't there. I have to say, though, we're getting better and better, which is what we want heading into the Big 12 Tournament."
Oklahoma State (15-19 overall, 1-5 Big 12) will play the 19th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies on Sunday in a noon doubleheader.
