NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma State's Jennifer Olival and Jaime Foutch each had two of OSU's six total hits as ninth-ranked Oklahoma's Jennifer Stewart shut down the Cowgirls in Bedlam action here Wednesday night. The Sooners scored three runs in the first and second innings and downed OSU, 7-2.
Stewart, a freshman from Yukon, Okla., kept the Cowgirls off balance all night long, shutting out Oklahoma State through five innings. Meanwhile, the Sooner offense got started early on, with a three-run home run of the bat of Ashley Barrett in the bottom of the first providing the spark. OU added three more runs in the second, including two on a hit by Lynette Velazquez up the middle. The Sooner first baseman leads the Big 12 Conference with 55 runs batted in.
Cowgirl pitcher Sheryl Anderson relieved starter Sarah Knife Chief in the second, after the damage was done, and allowed just one more run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Freshman Jessica Jenkins came on in the sixth and threw the final two innings.
Oklahoma threatened to end the game in the fifth in accordance with the run rule, as the Sooners loaded the bases with no outs with a single, a walk and a hit batsman. OSU second baseman Melissa Turley made a nice play to force the runner out at home for the first out, and third baseman Amanda Hayes made a diving stop of a hit down the line, threw home to Liz Silva for the force and then to Foutch at first for the double play.
Oklahoma State finally put a run on the board in the sixth inning when Jenny Kipp, Olival and Foutch led off the inning with back-to-back-to-back singles. Kipp was thrown out at home on Foutch's hit to right-center field, and Olival scored the first run on a passed ball by the Sooner catcher. Foutch then scored on a sacrifice fly by Silva.
Oklahoma State (16-21 overall, 2-7 Big 12) will host the Utah Utes on Friday in a single non-conference game beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Cowgirls will return to conference action on Saturday as OSU hosts the Baylor Bears in a noon doubleheader.
