COWGIRLS COMPETE IN BEACH CLASSIC
Oklahoma State (5-1) returns to action this weekend as the Cowgirls travel to Long Beach, Calif., to compete in the Beach Classic, hosted by Long Beach State. OSU will face the Detroit Titans (1-7) in the first game on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. (PST). LBSU (3-4) will host East Tennessee St. (1-6) in the second game at 7:30 p.m. On Monday, the consolation game will be played at 5:30 p.m., with the championship game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. This will be the first competition for OSU in the state of California since Dec. 1-2, 1989, when the Cowgirls played Brigham Young and Boise State in the Freedom Bowl Classic in Irvine, Texas.
COMING UP
The Cowgirls will take a week off before returning to the court on Monday, Dec. 28, in the Bertha Teague Memorial Classic, hosted by the Oklahoma Sooners. OSU will face Stephen F. Austin in the first game at 6 p.m. The Cowgirls will then face the Denver Pioneer Women on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 6 p.m. It will be the final non-conference game for Oklahoma State in 1998-99. OSU will open Big 12 Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 2, when the Cowgirls travel to Manhattan, Kan., to face the Kansas State Wildcats.
LAST TIME
Oklahoma State went to the line just nine times compared to Arkansas State's 33 as the Cowgirls lost to the Lady Indians, 68-65, two weeks ago in Jonesboro, Ark. It was ASU's 39th win in 40 games played at home vs. non-conference opponents in the 1990s. Senior Megan Gregg scored a team-high 16 points on 7-of- 12 shooting, while Jennifer Crow added 14 and Nikki Harmon had 10 points in the loss. The Cowgirls were called for 26 fouls compared to the Indians 12. There were also 48 turnovers in the game, including 25 traveling violations. OSU outshot Arkansas State, 40 percent to 38.5 percent, and made seven three pointers. The difference was at the line, where OSU made just six and ASU made 24.
COWGIRL NOTE-ABLE
Senior guard Kourtney Bower currently has 27 assists and just seven turnovers in the first six games this season, leading the Big 12 Conference with a 3.9:1 ratio ... Oklahoma State leads the league in free-throw percentage, making 74.2 percent of its shots from the line ... Both Nikki Harmon and Jennifer Crow rank in the top three in free-throw percentage in the Big 12 ... Harmon's 5.7 assists per game is the second-best in the league ... Freshman Kara Faulk ranks eighth in the league in offensive rebounds, averaging 3.2 per game ... Several of OSU's current players will move up the Cowgirl career charts this season. Jennifer Crow, just starting her third year in an OSU uniform, is currently fourth on the three-pointers made list with 100. She is also eighth on the free-throws made list with 267. Bower ranks 14th on the career three-pointers made list with 38, and sophomore Devon Magness is already 12th on the career blocked-shots list with 33 ... The Cowgirls will play nine teams this season that are currently receiving votes in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll.
SERIES BETWEEN OSU AND THE FIELD
Oklahoma State leads the all-time series with Detroit by a 1-0 margin, having won the only game between these two teams, 64-58, in the San Juan Shootout on Dec. 20, 1994, exactly four years prior to the upcoming game. The Cowgirls are 0-1 all-time vs. Long Beach State, the only meeting having been a 73-56 loss in the Bell Atlantic Tournament in Piscataway, N.J., on Dec. 29, 1991. OSU has never faced East Tennessee State.

CROW PICKS UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF
Cowgirl junior Jennifer Crow started the 1998-99 season right where she ended last year, leading the team. Crow's 23 points vs. SMU in the first game of the season led the game and were the most by a Cowgirl since she scored a career- high 25 points vs. Nebraska in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament last season. Her 10 rebounds in the game vs. SMU were a career high. Jennifer has scored in double figures in 40 of her 63 career games, and has scored at least 20 points in seven games, including 21 vs. Northwestern State earlier this year. Jennifer was named the MVP of the Jackson Diamond Jewelers' Cowgirl Classic, hosted by Oklahoma State.
HARMON WELL ROUNDED
Cowgirl senior Nikki Harmon was expected to be a scoring threat this season, but she has improved her game in all aspects for her senior year. Harmon is averaging 10.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. She is also averaging 5.7 assists per game from her small forward position, including 10 vs. Vanderbilt. Nikki was named to the all-tournament team of the Jackson Diamond Jewelers' Cowgirl Classic, hosted by Oklahoma State.
GREGG CONTINUES SHOOTING TOUCH
Cowgirl senior Megan Gregg continues to shoot the ball well this season, as proven by her 65.1 percent average from the floor. She has connected on 28-of-43 of her shots from the field, which currently ranks as the third-best in the Big 12 Conference. Megan set a school record for juniors last season with her 58.6 shooting percentage. It was also the second-highest percentage in OSU history.
FAULK SHOWS WHAT FRESHMEN CAN DO
True freshman Kara Faulk continues to impress the coaching staff, as can be seen by her 19 minutes averaged per game as a true freshman. She is fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 7.5 points per game, and is third on the squad with 5.7 rebounds per game. Kara recorded her first-ever double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds vs. Northwestern State in the Jackson Diamond Jewelers' Cowgirl Classic, hosted by Oklahoma State.
MAGNESS AVOIDS SOPH SLUMP
Despite an injured back, Cowgirl sophomore Devon Magness appears to have avoided the sophomore slump, as she is currently averaging 7.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. The 6-7 center has connected on 13-of-18 free throws, good for 72.2 percent. She has six assists and five blocked shots through the first six games.
STUBER COMING INTO OWN
Redshirt freshman Mandy Stuber showed last week what she's capable of, scoring eight points with four rebounds, three assists and two steals in just 16 minutes on the court. The 6-2 guard has the ability to play any of the five positions, with the ability to post up and shoot the three pointer.
COACH DICK HALTERMAN
Dick Halterman is in his 16th season as head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, and brings with him a 279-173 (.617) record, the most wins by a women's basketball coach in OSU history. Halterman came to Oklahoma State following a successful five-year career at Moberly Junior College, where he led his team to a 144-23 record in five seasons and the 1982 National Junior College Championship. Prior to that, Halterman was the head coach at Wheeling High School for four years, and led the team to a 105-11 record and the 1975 Missouri State High School Basketball Championship. Halterman is a two-time Big Eight Coach-of-the-Year selection, and has a 145-113 (.562) record vs. the rest of the Big 12. During Halterman's tenure, Oklahoma State has posted seven 20-victory seasons, the most recent being last season's 20-11 mark.
