Peterson to Try Out for Goodwill Games Team

STILLWATER, Okla. - OSU's Adrian Peterson is one of 33 players who have been invited to try out for the 1998 USA Basketball Goodwill Games Team.
Peterson, who will be a senior in 1998-99, has been OSU's leading scorer for the past two seasons, averaging 17.7 points as a junior, and was named first-team All-Big 12 by Basketball Times this past season. He ranks 11th in OSU history in career scoring and was named by the Kansas City Star as the early favorite to be the 1998-99 Pre-Season Big 12 Player of the Year.
The 1998 USA Basketball Men's National Team Trials will begin Friday, May 29, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The first session will be held on May 29 and will be followed by two sessions on Saturday, May 30. The trials will conclude with practice from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 31. Finalists for the two teams will be announced on Monday, June 1.
Four players who competed in the 1998 NCAA Final Four, Stanford guard Arthur Lee and forward Mark Madsen; Utah guard Andre Miller; and Kentucky forward Scott Padgett join Peterson among the list of invitees for the Goodwill Games Team. Also included among the trials are Big 10 Conference Player of the Year Mateen Cleaves of Michigan State, Big East Conference Player of the Year Richard Hamilton of Connecticut, and Big East Freshman of the Year Khalid El-Amin of Connecticut.
The trials include one other Big 12 player besides Peterson; Oklahoma forward Ryan Humphrey will participate in the tryout, as will Tulsa star Michael Ruffin.
Minnesota coach Clem Haskins will serve as head coach of the 1998 Goodwill Games team. The Goodwill Games will be held July 19-24 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The team will train July 5-12 in Minneapolis before playing the 1998 USA Basketball Men's World Championship, comprised of NBA players, in a July 14 exhibition.
