Oklahoma State Cowboys
(21-6 Overall, 11-5 Big 12)
NCAA Tournament 1st-/2nd-Round Notes
OSU's surprisingly successful year - the Cowboys were picked seventh in the Big 12 in preseason media and coaches' polls - began with the third-best start in school history. OSU opened the season 11-0 and eventually became the sixth Eddie Sutton-coached Cowboy team to win 20 games. The March 1 loss to Kansas snapped another long streak, this time a seven-game skein (the best in league play since 1954). OSU won 11 league games for the first time since the 1964-65 team went 12-2 in the Big Eight. In addition, the Cowboys won all their February games for the first time since 1940. The Cowboys are guaranteed no more than seven losses, the fewest since the 1983 Big Eight Championship team went 24-7.
Cowboys return to Tourney for first time in three yearsOSU has earned its first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 1995 team, led by Bryant "Big Country" Reeves and Randy Rutherford, reached the Final Four in Seattle. This year's berth marks the sixth in Eddie Sutton's eight years in Stillwater and the 15th in school history. OSU has enjoyed some tournament success; the Cowboys have reached the Final Four five times and are 13-1 in their opening tournament games. Here's a look at some OSU
Tournament Trivia:* OSU, then known as Oklahoma A&M, was the first school to win back-to-back NCAA titles when Bob Kurland led the Aggies to titles in 1945 and '46. OSU is one of just five schools with back-to-back NCAA trophies and one of only 11 universities with two trophies overall.
* Kurland was named the Outstanding Player of the tournament in both championship years and is one of only five players in NCAA history to win the award twice.
* OSU hit 80 percent (20 of 35) of its field-goal attempts in the 1992 second round against Tulane; that mark still stands as a tournament record.
* The 1946 NCAA Championship game against North Carolina was the first to be televised locally and was broacast on WCBS in New York with an estimated audience of 500,000.
* Legendary former OSU coach Henry Iba is one of 10 coaches to win at least two NCAA titles.
* Eddie Sutton is the only coach to take four different schools to the NCAA Tournament.

Men's basketball part of OSU's overall athletic success
Although March means men's and women's basketball, OSU is known nationally for its success in several different sports. The Cowboys' 30 national wrestling titles are the most by any school in any sport, and Oklahoma State ranks fourth in NCAA history with 42 national team titles in all men's sports. In addition to its 30 wrestling and two men's basketball championships, OSU has also won titles in men's golf (eight), baseball (one) and men's cross country (one). The Cowboys' total of 138 individual national titles ranks sixth all-time.
Cowboys, Colonials match up for first time in 43 yearsOSU and George Washington have met five times, with the Cowboys winning three of the meetings, but the most recent contest was in the 1954-55 season. Ironically, the Cowboys' only previous meeting with potential second-round foe Duke (OSU won 51-41) came on Dec. 19, 1939, the day before the Cowboys and Colonials met for the first time (the Cowboys won that game as well, 38-33 in overtime). OSU and Radford have never met.
Cowboys return to Sutton's old stomping groundsFor the second time in his OSU tenure, head coach Eddie Sutton leads the NCAA Tournament-bound Cowboys into Rupp Arena, where Sutton coached Kentucky for four seasons. The Cowboys faced Michigan's Fab Five team in Lexington in the 1992 round of16; the Wolverines were victorious, winning 75-72.
Inside the numbersOSU's improvement from 17-win seasons in 1996 and '97 to a 21-win year this season can be attributed to several statistical improvements. Here's a look at OSU's current team stats with comparison to year-end stats from the past two seasons (number in parentheses represents current Big 12 rank):

Revenge has been sweet in '98
OSU's 1997-98 schedule includes 10 teams that defeated the Cowboys in 1996-97. OSU compiled a 3-13 record against those squads a year ago but is 10-5 so far in 1997-98. The Cowboys' turnaround victories include non-conference opponents Arizona State, Arkansas State and Oral Roberts as well as sweeps of league foes Texas Tech and Oklahoma.
1998 proves a successful road seasonOSU won 14 games at home last year, but the Cowboys were just 1-12 on the road and lost their first nine games in unfriendly territory. The Cowboys reversed that trend in 1997-98, though, finishing with a 6-3 road record that includes victories at TCU, Oklahoma and Texas Tech. OSU won five conference road games for the first time since 1965 and recorded its first overall winning road record in four years. Surprisingly, the Cowboys' road three-point shooting percentage (40.4 percent) is better than their home percentage (29.0).

Cowboys scoring at highest rate in seven years
OSU averaged 69.4 points per game in 1996-97, making last season's team the lowest-scoring Cowboys in 20 years, and they were out-scored by their combined opponents for the first time since 1988. But this season, OSU is averaging 79.3 points per game (which would be the highest scoring average since Eddie Sutton's first OSU season and fifth-best in school history) and out-scoring its opponents by an average of 10.0 points. The Cowboys have reached the century mark in two games this season after failing to score 100 in the past two years and have had more 80-point games this season (14) than in the past two seasons combined. OSU's high-scoring offense features a balanced group of players; four average at least 12 points per game. Only one team in school history (1988-89) finished a season with four players averaging 12 points.

A quick check of the Big 12 field-goal defense list may surprise observers accustomed to the defense played by Eddie Sutton's teams as his Cowboys are ranked ninth in the league in that category. But the field goal percentage doesn't tell the entire defensive story. OSU leads the Big 12 in turnover margin (+3.6) and is averaging 17.5 takeaways per game, the second-best average in school history. In addition, the Cowboys have committed just 14.0 turnovers per game, the second-best mark on the school charts. OSU has committed an average of 10.3 turnovers in the past six games while forcing an average of 14.9.
Free-throw shooting helps OSU to close victoriesOSU hit 22 of 23 free-throw attempts (95.7 percent) at Texas Tech, coming within four charities of the school single-game record of 26 for 27 (96.3 percent), set in 1961. The Cowboys also missed just one FT attempt at Kansas State, sinking 15 of 16 charities. The Cowboys hit 18 of 18 second-half attempts against the Red Raiders and went 8-for-8 against the Wildcats in the second period; after missing in the second half just twice each against Texas and Kansas, OSU now has hit 65 of 74 (87.8 percent) from the stripe in the second half of the past five games. The Cowboys finished the season second in the Big 12 in free-throw percentage in conference games (74.5), and their 70.7 percentage overall ranks as the best under Eddie Su tton. OSU has attempted 149 more free throws than its opponents, a major turnaround from last season, when the Cowboys shot fewer charities than their opponents for the first time since 1988. The axiom that free-throw shooting helps win close games appears to be coming true for OSU, which is 7-4 in games decided in overtime or by a five-point or smaller margin.
Peterson gets hot as Cowboys reach Big 12 playSince the beginning of the calendar year, junior guard Adrian Peterson has scored in double figures in all but two of OSU's games - and that's just after halftime. Peterson, who has averaged 6.8 points in the first half and 12.5 in the second period since Jan. 3, was named Second-Team All-Big 12 this past week. "Pete" set a new career best with a 29-point effort at Baylor, draining 22 of those points after the break. OSU's leading scorer (17.6 ppg), Peterson scored 24 points in the Big 12 Tournament loss to Texas to move into 11th place on OSU's all-time scoring list.
Mason continues sensational sophomore seasonSophomore forward Desmond Mason has had a breakthrough sophomore season, earning All-Big 12 third-team status (coaches) as well as league all-improved honors. After struggling at times as a freshman and averaging just 4.5 points and 2.5 rebounds, Mason has found his rhythm this year and is OSU's third-leading scorer and second-leading rebounder. He set a career high in scoring with 27 points and tied his rebounding high with 14 in OSU's Feb. 24 victory over Texas. Mason, who has seven 20-point games and seven double-doubles to his credit this year, now averages 14.9 ppg, second among Big 12 sophomores. His 7.6 rebounds-per-game average is ninth in the league.
Gottlieb passes his way into the record booksThis season, sophomore guard Doug Gottlieb, a Big 12 all-newcomer honoree and an honorable mention all-conference pick, has recorded 188 assists and just 68 turnovers, a 2.76-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio (best in the Big 12). Gottlieb had a career-high 12 assists at home against Baylor while committing only one turnover - with 16 seconds remaining in the game. Just 27 games into his OSU career, Gottlieb is second in school history in double-figure assist games (six). His currently ranks fourth on the OSU single-season assists chart.
Robisch picks up the scoring paceSenior center Brett Robisch, an all-conference second-team member, has averaged 17.5 points in the past 10 games, capped by a career-high 33-point performance at Texas Tech on Feb. 18. Robisch's performance, in which he matched Tech star Cory Carr point-for-point, included two three-pointers and the game-winning free throws with 3.5 seconds remaining in overtime. Robisch's scoring output marked the first time an OSU player had scored 30 points since Randy Rutherford tallied 45 against Kansas on March 5, 1995. Despite playing just two seasons, Robisch ranks sixth in school history with 10 double-doubles.
Robisch was named this past week to the Big 12's all-improved team, and the stats bear that out: he averaged 2.0 points per game in his two seasons at Illinois, 5.5 points in his first 10 games last year, 12.4 points in the last 17 games of 1996-97, 13.8 points over the first 15 games this season and 17.4 over the past 12 games.
Adkins' improvement mirrors fellow soph Mason'sSophomore guard Joe Adkins hit four three-pointers - most coming from NBA range and beyond - in the first 8:06 of the second half at Kansas State, keying OSU's rally from a two-point halftime deficit. Averaging 12.2 points and leading the team in three-pointers made (46), he has made a remarkable improvement from his freshman season, when he averaged 3.8 points and hit just 18 threes all year. Adkins has been deadly accurate from the free-throw line of late, hitting 44 of 50 free-throw attempts in conference games (best in the league at 88.0 percent). The 6-2 guard's 11 points against Baylor included a spectacular one-handed dunk over 6-11 Bears center Brian Skinner.
Big 12 Tournament recapThe Cowboys entered last weekend's Big 12 Tournament as the second seed, having won seven of their last eight regular-season contests. But the Cowboys were upset in the quarterfinals by 10th-seeded Texas 65-64 when Brandy Perryman hit a three-pointer with 31 seconds left and Brett Robisch's short jumper misfired with less than five seconds on the clock. The Cowboys' loss marked the second straight year in which the Big 12's 10th seed advanced to the tournament semifinals.
1998 results littered with Cowboy comebacksThe Cowboys have set a school record with four double-digit comebacks this season, and the 17-point comeback against Arizona State is the best in OSU history, according to recent research. The Cowboys are 15-1 when holding a double-digit lead at some point during the game.
Cowboy Radio NetworkOSU's tournament games will be broadcast on the OSU Radio Network with KWTV's Bill Teegins handling play-by-play duties and OSU coordinator of radio & TV Tom Dirato providing commentary. Dirato and Teegins are in their seventh year as the Cowboys' basketball radio team, and Dirato is calling OSU men's basketball for the 21st season in 1997-98 and called his 600th OSU game against Texas A&M, the same day as Coach Sutton's 600th victory. All NCAA Tournament games will be televised by CBS Sports.
Head Coach Eddie SuttonEddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) has coached for seven-plus years at his alma mater with a 178-76 record at the school as well as a 608-240 overall mark in his 28th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to postseason play in seven of eight years and has won 20 games or more six times.
Big 12 Coach of the Year: Sutton has won league coach-of-the-year honors for the seventh time in his 23 seasons with non-independent schools. Sutton previously won coaching honors in the Southwest, Southeastern and Big Eight Conferences; he and former Oklahoma coaching rival Billy Tubbs (Southland, Big Eight, Southwest and WAC Pacific Division) are believed to be the only coaches to win coach-of-the-year awards in four different leagues.
600th victory: OSU's Jan. 24 victory over Texas A&M gave Sutton the 600th coaching triumph of his career and his 100th coaching victory in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Sutton is the 20th coach in Division I history to reach the 600-victory mark, and he is just the seventh coach to reach it in 28 years or less, joining Denny Crum, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Jerry Tarkanian and John Wooden.
Among his peers: Among active coaches, Sutton ranks 14th in winning percentage and ninth in victories. Only three active coaches (Crum, Knight and Tarkanian) rank ahead of Sutton in both victories and winning percentage. With Sutton and Henry P. Iba among the 600-win club, OSU is one of only three schools - joining Illinois (Gene Bartow and Lou Henson) and Kentucky (Sutton and Adolph Rupp) - with two coaches among the all-time top 20.
In the NCAA Tournament: Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the national tournament. He is one of 10 coaches to take two different teams to the Final Four.
