JONESBORO, Ark. - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl basketball team blew a 19-point lead in the final 10 minutes and fell to the Arkansas State Lady Indians, 68-65, here Saturday afternoon in the Convocation Center.
OSU led, 59-40, with 9:44 remaining in the game after a 15-0 run, including nine consecutive points from junior Jennnifer Crow. The Lady Indians took a timeout at the 9:39 mark, and proceded to go on a 28-6 run to finish the game.
"When you're up by 19 points, all you have to do is respond to each score by the other team with one of your own," said OSU Coach Dick Halterman. "You have to give credit to Arkansas State. They never got down and really fought their way back into the game."
The win improved Arkansas State's overall non-conference record at home in the 1990s to 39-1. The Lady Indians have won all three games at home this season, including wins over 17th-ranked Kansas and 18th-ranked Virginia.
The Cowgirls still led, 63-62, with 2:35 remaining. But, ASU guard Kellina Bradshaw stole the ball and drove the length of the court for a layup on the opposite end to put the Indians up for good. OSU, down by three with 16 seconds to go, got a three-point attempt by freshman Mandy Stuber with five seconds left, but the ball bounced off the front of the rim and ASU got the rebound and the win.
Senior Megan Gregg led all Cowgirl scorers with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while Crow added 14 and Nikki Harmon added 10. Devon Magness scored just one point in 18 minutes of play.
"This was an important game for us, but we're not out of it yet," said Halterman. We've got to go back to the drawing board and get ready for the tournament out in California. We've still got a chance to pick up some wins before we enter Big 12 Conference play."
Oklahoma State (5-1) will travel to Long Beach, Calif., for the Beach Classic, Dec. 20-21. The Cowgirls will play Detroit in the first round of action on Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m. CST.
