BOULDER, Colo. - Eighth-ranked Oklahoma State earned its first Big 12 Women's Golf Championship on Wednesday, and OSU sophomore Maria Boden took home the team's first individual conference medalist honors in four years.
The Cowgirls carded a 54-hole score of 906 and held off second-place Texas by two strokes to give OSU its first women's league championship in any sport since the inception of the Big 12 Conference before the 1996-97 season. The title is also OSU's first circuit championship in any sport this season.
After heading into the day with a one-shot lead over Texas Tech, OSU recorded the day's second-best round with a 302 -- only the Longhorns, at 300, had a better score -- to secure the victory. Texas Tech finished third, three shots behind Texas.
Boden went into the 18th hole with a two-shot lead but double-bogeyed; however, she recovered to beat Oklahoma's Wendy Martin and Texas Tech's Brooke Lowrance in a three-way playoff after the trio tied at 3-over-par 219.
Senior Eva Lotta Stromlid recorded an 8-over-par 224 to finish fifth individually. Freshman Emma Zackrisson (22nd at 16-over-par 232), senior JoJo Robertson (25th, 233) and junior Natasha Rowe (30th, 234) finished just out of the top 20.
The Cowgirls took home a conference trophy for the first time since they won the last three Big Eight Championships, culminating in a 1996 title. Boden, the 1999 Big 12 Player of the Year, became OSU's first conference medalist since current assistant coach Amy Weeks took home the 1995 Big Eight title. OSU earned its 15th conference team title -- the Cowgirls won 14 of 21 Big Eight Championships -- and Boden became the team's 17th conference medalist.
The team title adds to an already-impressive season for OSU; in addition to Boden's regular-season honor, head coach Ann Pitts was the Big 12 Coach of the Year for the second straight campaign, and Robertson joined Boden on the all-conference first team. Additionally, Stromlid was named to the All-Big 12 second team.
The Cowgirls will compete in the NCAA West Regional on May 6-8 in Houston. Teams qualifying for the NCAA Championship will meet in Tulsa for the national tournament May 19-22.
