ATHENS, Ga. - Oklahoma State's Pavel Kudrnac advanced to the third round of the 1998 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships today in Athens, Ga.
Kudrnac, the top seed in the tournament, defeated New Mexico's Jeff Williams 6-1, 6-3 to earn the right to play Ryan Sachire of Notre Dame at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.
"It's hard to say (if I played better than I did yesterday). I definitely didn't play much better. I still struggled a little bit," Kudrnac said. "I don't really like the weather and the conditions, but I have to get used to it. I have to improve my game a lot to win. I made a lot of points with my serve, and I didn't have to get a lot of points with my ground strokes."
The doubles tandem of Kudrnac and Martin Dvoracek fell to South Alabama's John James and Claes Westlin in a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 decision. The South Alabama duo also defeated top-ranked Kudrnac and Dvoracek in a 8-6 match on March 7. This was the second consecutive year for the top-seeded doubles team to lose in the first round.
