ATHENS, Ga. - Oklahoma State's Pavel Kudrnac advanced to the second round of the 1998 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships today in Athens, Ga.
Kudrnac, the top seed in the tournament, defeated Esteban Carril of TCU 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 6-2 to earn the right to play New Mexico's Jeff Williams tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. The doubles tandem of Kudrnac and Martin Dvoracek will face South Alabama's John James and Chad Westlin tomorrow at 3 p.m.
"I knew it would be a tough match for me because I played him a lot before. I knew that he would make me play my best, but actually I didn't play my best," Kudrnac said. "I was struggling with my ground strokes. My serve was the most important weapon I had all day."
Earlier today, Kudrnac was named the ITA Farnsworth/Senior Player of the Year. He was honored at the ITA Collegiate Men's Tennis Hall of Fame Banquet held in conjunction with the NCAA Championships at the University of Georgia.
