STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State junior guard Doug Gottlieb ranks as the nation's best assist man in the final 1998-99 NCAA Division I men's basketball statistics released today.
Gottlieb's school-record total of 299 assists, which ranks 13th in NCAA history, leads his nearest competitor by 49, and his per-game average of 8.8 tops Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year Chico Fletcher (8.3 apg) of Arkansas State.
Gottlieb becomes just the second OSU player to lead the country in a statistical category; the first was Arlen Clark, whose 85.2 free-throw percentage led the nation in 1959.
Gottliebs year was filled with record-setting assist performances. He set OSU records for assists in a game (18 vs. Florida Atlantic on Dec. 1), season and career (500) as well as Big 12 marks for a single game, a season, a conference season, a conference tournament game and a conference tournament.
The Cowboys also finished the 1998-99 season ranked No. 29 in Division I in scoring margin (8.4). Gottlieb produced three of the nations top 10 single-game assist totals; in addition to his 18 against Florida Atlantic, he had 15 against UNLV on Dec. 22 and against Texas Tech on Feb. 27.
