COWGIRLS TRAVEL TO AUSTIN
Oklahoma State (10-5 overall, 2-3 Big 12) will travel to Austin, Texas, this Wednesday to face the Texas Longhorns (8-7, 2-3). Tipoff in the Erwin Events Center is set for 7 p.m. OSU is coming off a 79-68 loss to the sixth-ranked Texas Tech Lady Raiders, while Texas lost to Kansas State in Manhattan, 75-68. UT leads the all-time series, 5-2, including a 2-1 record in Austin.
LAST TIME
After watching the first 2-1/2 minutes of the OSU-TTU game last Saturday night,
you would have thought the Lady Raiders would have won by 50 points. That was
not the case, however. Take out that time span, and OSU would have beaten Texas
Tech. But spotting TTU 14 points won't win many ballgames. In the game, OSU shot
better than Texas Tech, had more rebounds, and shot better from the free-throw
line. The difference was in the turnovers, of which OSU had 26 while Tech had
just 16. The Raiders scored 31 points off OSU's turnovers. Jennifer Crow had a
season-high 24 points for the Cowgirls, and Kara Faulk led all players with
eight rebounds.
COMING UP
Oklahoma State goes back on the road this weekend as the Cowgirls travel to
College Station, Texas, to avenge a 61-57 loss earlier this year to the Texas A&
M Lady Aggies (6-9 overall, 1-4 Big 12). Tipoff on Saturday at the new Reed
Arena is set for 2 p.m. Next up will be a home date against Colorado (8-7, 1-4)
on Thursday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
COWGIRL NOTE-ABLE
Junior Jennifer Crow set the all-time OSU career school mark for three-pointers
made with her first trey vs. Texas Tech last Saturday, surpassing Althea Cox's
111 ... Senior Nikki Harmon leads the Big 12 in free-throw percentage this
season, shooting 90.0 percent ... Senior guard Kourtney Bower is third in the
Big 12 Conference with a 2.04 assists-to-turnover ratio ... Oklahoma State leads
the nation in free-throw percentage, making 78.5 percent of its shots >from the
line ... Harmon's 4.6 assists per game is the eighth-best in the league ...
Megan Gregg 57.7 percent shooting from the floor leads the team ... Several of
OSU's current players have moved up the Cowgirl career charts this season.
Jennifer Crow is sixth on the free-throws made list with 324. Bower ranks 11th
on the career three-pointers made list with 47, and sophomore Devon Magness is
already 11th on the career blocked-shots list with 39.
CROW NEARING MILESTONE
Junior Jennifer Crow is currently 62 points shy of the 1,000 mark in her career.
She already has 257 this season through 15 games and, on her current pace, would
break the barrier at Iowa State on February 3. Jennifer became the all-time
three-point leader in OSU history when she hit her 112th vs. Texas Tech last
Saturday (not in a game, that would be a record). She leads the team in scoring,
averaging 17.1 points per game, and also leads the team in three-pointers made
with 24. She is second on the team in free throw percentage, and her 95 FTs made
lead the Big 12 Conference. Jennifer has scored in double figures in 50 of her
73 career games, and has scored at least 20 points in 11 games. Jennifer
recorded the second double-double of her career with 19 points and 11 rebounds
vs. Stephen F. Austin. Jennifer was named the MVP of the Jackson Diamond
Jewelers' Cowgirl Classic, and was named to the all-tournament team of the Beach
Classic.
HARMON WELL BALANCED
Cowgirl senior Nikki Harmon was expected to be a scoring threat this season, but
she has improved her game in all aspects for her senior year. Harmon is
averaging 9.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. She is also averaging 4.6
assists per game from her small forward position, including a career-high 10 vs.
Vanderbilt. Nikki leads the team and the Big 12 Conference in free-throw
shooting, connecting on 45-of-50 shots from the line this year. She made 25
consecutive free throws before a miss vs. Texas A&M broke the string. The school
record is 28. Nikki was named to the all-tournament team of the Jackson Diamond
Jewelers' Cowgirl Classic, hosted by Oklahoma State.
GREGG CONTINUES SHOOTING TOUCH
Cowgirl senior Megan Gregg continues to shoot the ball well this season, as
proven by her 57.7 percent shooting from the floor. She has connected on 60-of-
104 of her shots from the field. Megan set a school record for juniors last
season with her 58.6 shooting percentage. It was also the second-highest
percentage in OSU history. Her current 59.2 career FG percentage is the best-
ever at Oklahoma State. Megan was named to the all-tournament team of the Bertha
Teague Memorial Classic.
NO. 1 OFF THE BENCH
True freshman Kara Faulk continues to impress the coaching staff, as can be seen
by her 15 minutes averaged per game as a true freshman in her role off the
bench. She is fifth on the team in scoring, averaging 5.7 points per game, and
is sixth on the squad with 3.9 rebounds per game. She also leads the team in
offensive boards with 33. Kara recorded her first-ever double-double with 10
points and 11 rebounds vs. Northwestern State in the Jackson Diamond Jewelers'
Cowgirl Classic.
SMITH GETS START
True freshman Coleman Smith spent 29 minutes on the floor last Saturday
afternoon vs. Baylor, thanks to some fine play on both the offensive and
defensive ends of the court. Coleman not only scored 10 points in the Cowgirls'
four-point victory, but she also limited Baylor's trio of forwards to just five
points for the game, 13 points below their combined season average. For her
efforts, Smith was nominated by OSU for the Big 12 Conference's Rookie-of-the-
Week honor. In fact, her play last week got her the first start of her career,
vs. Texas Tech.
STUBER COMING INTO OWN
Redshirt freshman Mandy Stuber has shown what she's capable of doing, despite
her limited playing time. In just nine minutes per game, she is averaging 3.2
points and 2.0 rebounds per game. She has 10 assists, five blocks and nine
steals in 13 games. The 6-2 guard has the ability to play any of the five
positions, and is able to post up or shoot the three pointer.
MOOKIE GETS PT
Sophomore center Toya Releford, aka Mookie, got some quality playing time,
despite a jammed finger on her shooting hand. Toya scored eight points on 4-of-7
shooting in 18 minutes on the court. She also had two rebounds. After sitting
out the first semester, Mookie has averaged 11.8 minutes per game in six games.
AUSTRALIAN FOR B-BALL
Baylor's Lara Webb isn't the only Australian playing in the Big 12 Conference.
OSU freshman Jessica Spinner has averaged 5.7 points per game over the last
three contests, including seven-point performances vs. both Baylor and Oklahoma.
She's hit 5-of-13 from behind the arc.
COACH DICK HALTERMAN
Dick Halterman is in his 16th season as head coach of the Oklahoma State
Cowgirls, and brings with him a 284-177 (.616) record, the most wins by a
women's basketball coach in OSU history. Halterman came to Oklahoma State
following a successful five-year career at Moberly Junior College, where he led
his team to a 144-23 record in five seasons and the 1982 National Junior College
Championship. Prior to that, Halterman was the head coach at Wheeling High
School for four years, and led the team to a 105-11 record and the 1975 Missouri
State High School Basketball Championship. Halterman is a two-time Big Eight
Coach-of-the-Year selection, and has a 147-116 (.559) record vs. the rest of the
Big 12. During Halterman's tenure, Oklahoma State has posted seven 20-victory
seasons, the most recent being last season's 20-11 mark.
