STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl basketball team overcame 25 turnovers and defeated UMKC, 77-58, in the championship of the Jackson Diamond Jewelers Cowgirl Classic here Saturday afternoon. It is the sixth-consecutive home tournament OSU has won.
Jennifer Crow once again led all scorers with 16 points and was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Senior Nikki Harmon was also named to the all-tournament team, and senior Megan Gregg received votes.
OSU went on an 11-0 run to start the game and went up by as many as 21 points with 4:57 left in the first half. But, UMKC battled back, outscoring OSU 9-2 for the halftime score of 36-22.
With all five starters in as late as the 12:10 mark, OSU went up by 32 on two occasions. Then, with four freshman and senior point guard Shelly Jackson in the game, the Roos got within 17 with 7:18 remaining, but never any closer.
"We got a lot of help from everybody tonight," said OSU Coach Dick Halterman. "We got the big lead and then we were able to get some of our players in the game and they played pretty well. We got solid play out of our starters. Nikki played well, Jennifer shot the ball well in the first half. Devon (Magness) and Megan also played prett good for the most part. We are getting better."
Crow finished the tournament with 37 points, including 16-of-18 from the free- throw line. Harmon had 22 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists in the tourney, while Gregg finished with 25 points, nine rebounds and 9-of-11 shooting from the floor.
"I haven't made an all-tournament team since Ive been here, so that was kind of one of my goals," said Harmon. "After I played good Friday night and scored in double figures, I set the goal to play good today."
In the consolation game, Northwestern State defeated New Mexico, 66-59, and had both Judy Clark and Kia Converse named to the all-tournament team. Other honors went to UNMs Jennifer Williams and UMKCs Kaycee Kapels.
"It is always nice to win a tournament, especially your own," said Halterman. "I thought we had four pretty good teams in here and I thought we would be challenged a bit more, but this was a good tournament for us."
Oklahoma State (4-0) returns to action Wednesday night as the Cowgirls host the 21st-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores in a regional-televised broadcast by Fox Sports Southwest. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
