COWGIRLS FACE LONGHORNS
Oklahoma State travels to Austin, Texas, this Wednesday to play the Texas Longhorns at 7 p.m. The Cowgirls are coming off a 78-47 win over the Kansas State Wildcats Saturday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena, while UT is fresh off a 99-59 victory over the Baylor Bears in Austin. Oklahoma State defeated Texas, 82-61, earlier this season in Stillwater, the first win ever for the Cowgirls over UT. This is an important game for both teams, with OSU holding a two-game margin over Texas in the Big 12 Conference standings.
TOP-HALF FINISH
With Oklahoma State,s eight wins so far in conference play this season, the Cowgirls have guaranteed themselves a top-half finish in the conference. OSU can finish no lower than sixth place in the league, even if the Cowgirls were to lose out. Oklahoma State has a two-game lead on Texas, the only team that could catch OSU, and if the two teams were to finish tied at 8-8, OSU would own the tie breaker with a 5-5 record in the division, compared to Texas, 4-6 record vs. south divisional teams.
COMING UP
Oklahoma State will close out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 28 with a 3 p.m. game vs. Oklahoma in Gallagher-Iba Arena. It will be ,Orange Day0/00 in Gallagher-Iba Arena, as the Cowgirls attempt to pack the house and sweep the bedlam-rival Sooners. Any fan who wears orange to the game can obtain admission for $1. Following the OU game, OSU will prepare for the Big 12 Tournament, which will begin on Tuesday, Mar. 3, at 12:05 p.m.
LAST TIME
Oklahoma State,s Cheri Edwards scored a season-high 25 points and led the Cowgirls to a 78-47 victory over the Kansas State Wildcats Saturday night. Edwards was unstoppable, connecting on 7-of-10 shots from the floor and a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line. Angie Finkes led the Wildcats with 17 points and nine rebounds. Senior Brit Jacobson, KSU,s leading scorer, was held to just 10 points and had limited playing time due to early foul trouble. In a game that saw 49 fouls called and 45 turnovers, Oklahoma State shot 49.0 percent from the field while limiting KSU to just 29.8 percent. The Cowgirls also made 26-of-33 free throws, including 10 by Edwards. ,Defensively, I thought we played great,0/00 said OSU Coach Dick Halterman. ,We got beat a couple of times, but for the most part, we played solid. In the first half, they beat us bad on the defensive boards. We did a poor job of blocking out, but we did a better job on the boards in the second half.
EDWARDS, ROBERTS NECK-AND-NECK
Seniors Cheri Edwards and Renee Roberts are neck-and-neck going into the stretch, tied for ninth in the OSU career-rebounding list with 518. Both reached the 500-career rebound mark earlier this month, just the 11th and 12th players to do so in Oklahoma State history. With two games remaining in the regular season, both should surpass Jodi Fisher (8th with 525) before the season is over.
CROW REMAINS CONSISTENT
Sophomore guard Jennifer Crow may be the most consistent player for the Cowgirls right now. She has scored at least nine points in 22 games this season. She has hit the double-figure mark on 18 occasions this year, including a season-high 20 vs. Iowa State. She currently leads the team in points (295), points per game (12.3), steals (44), free-throw percentage (.811) and three-pointers made (31). Jennifer was a three-time Big 12 Conference Rookie of the Week last season, and has put up even better numbers this year.
70 THE MAGIC NUMBER
This season, anytime either Oklahoma State or the opponent has scored at least 70 points, that team has won the basketball game. The Cowgirls are 12-0 when scoring at least 70 points, and six of those have come with 80 or more points. Likewise, when OSU,s opponents have scored at least 70 points, the opponents are 4-0.
COACH DICK HALTERMAN
Dick Halterman is in his 15th season as head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, and brings with him a 269-170 (.613) record, the most wins by a women's basketball coach in OSU history. Halterman came to Oklahoma State following a successful five-year career at Moberly Junior College, where he led his team to a 144-23 record in five seasons and the 1982 National Junior College Championship. Prior to that, Halterman was the head coach at Wheeling High School for four years, and led the team to a 105-11 record and the 1975 Missouri State High School Basketball Championship. Halterman is a two-time Big Eight Coach-of-the-Year selection, and has a 141-112 (.557) record vs. the rest of the Big 12.
