STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Jennifer Crow scored 23 points, but the Cowgirls blew a 20-point lead as Oklahoma defeated OSU, 61-53, here Wednesday night before a mediocre crowd of 2,726 at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Oklahoma State scored the first 15 points of the game before OU's Phylesha Whaley finally hit a jumper at the 14:37 mark of the first half. In that span, the Sooners committed seven turnovers and six fouls. OSU continued to score at will, going up by as many as 20 with a 30-10 lead with 6:32 remaining in the first period.
Oklahoma cut the lead to 13 at halftime as the Cowgirls went into the lockerroom with a 35-22 lead. Crow had 13 points and five assists in the first half, and OSU shot 56.5 percent from the floor, compared to OU's 36 percent.
The second period started much like the first, in the opposite direction. The Cowgirls missed their first 10 field-goal attempts, and Oklahoma went on a 14-2 run over the first seven minutes of the second half. OSU held onto its lead until OU caught the Cowgirls at 41-41, and then the Sooners went ahead. There were two lead changes following that, and a tie at 50-50 with 4:01 remaining.
Oklahoma went on an 11-3 run for the remainder of the game, including seven free throws. Oklahoma State was called for 17 fouls in the second half, compared to just nine called on OU. Oklahoma was given two calls, both offensive charges called against OSU, that were obviously flops by the defenders. Both were called in the final six minutes, one of which Kourtney Bower fouled out of the game.
Oklahoma State (12-9 overall, 4-7 Big 12) will host the Texas Longhorns on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
