Cowgirl Softball Advances at Big 12 Tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Sarah Knife Chief threw a shutout, scattering six hits, as the Cowgirls defeated Iowa State, 1-0, here Wednesday afternoon in a play-in game at the Big 12 Softball Tournament at the Don E. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Cowgirls, meanwhile, had just three hits, including two by All-American Jaime Foutch. Fortunately, two came in the fourth inning, when Foutch reached on her first hit, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Michelle Singer. With two outs, senior Melissa Turley hit a line drive through the right side of the infield, scoring Foutch.
Iowa State struck early, loading the bases in the top of the first on two hits and a walk. All this occurred with two outs, before Knife Chief struck out designated player Kim Hoover to end the threat. The Cowgirl hurler kept the Cyclones in check the rest of the evening, while just one ISU baserunner got past first base. Lauren Cathey doubled in the top of the sixth, but Knife Chief struck out Laura Browning to end the inning.
Earlier in the day, Oklahoma State had several players earn all-conference honors. Michelle Singer (designated player), Jaime Foutch (utility player) and Jennifer Olival (outfielder) earned first-team All-Big 12 accolades, while Liz Silva (catcher) was named to the second team. Outfielder Shelly Graham was named the Big 12's Newcomer of the Year.
Nine Cowgirls were named Academic All-Big 12, with Jenny Kipp, Paula Garman, Katie Wise, Sheryl Anderson, Jennifer Olival, Melissa Turley and Amanda Hayes earning first-team honors, while Kristine Garcia and Christina Shaddox were named honorable mention.
Oklahoma State (21-22) will play the top-seeded Oklahoma Sooners (38-12) Thursday morning at 10 a.m.
