OSU TO COMPETE IN WEST REGIONAL
Oklahoma State's Cowgirl golf team will compete in the NCAA West
Regional Golf Championships, May 6-8, at the Pine Forest Country Club in Houston,
Texas. The event is hosted by Texas A&M University. The format will be a
54-hole, stroke-play tournament with 18 holes played each day. Oklahoma
State's practice round on Wednesday will be at 11 a.m., and the Cowgirls
will tee off at 9:18 a.m. on Thursday, and 8:15 a.m. on Friday.
Saturday's
tee times will be determined based on placing after the first two days.

COWGIRLS HOPE TO CONTINUE WINNING WAYS
Oklahoma State's Cowgirl golf team has won five tournaments this season,
the
most since 1989, when OSU won the Big Eight title and went on to finish
seventh at the NCAA Championships. This year's team won the Big 12 Fall
Preview last October in Austin, and won two consecutive tournaments when
the
Cowgirls brought home the team title at both the Hawaii Princeville in
Kauai, Hawaii, and the UCLA Bruin Classic in Menefee Lakes, Calif.
Oklahoma
State also won the BYU/Utah-Dixie Classic, and the most recent title for
OSU
was at the Big 12 Championships, with a two-stroke victory over
second-place
Texas.
OSU VS. THE FIELD
Oklahoma State has a 37-16 record vs. the rest of the participants in
this
year's West Regional, including at least one victory over 16 of the
opponents. The Cowgirls are undefeated against nine of the teams, and at
least .500 vs. 14 of the squads. This season, OSU is 126-18 overall,
good
for a .875 percentage.
BODEN CONTINUES DOMINANCE
Sophomore Maria Bodn began her second season at OSU much like she
finished
her first, on top. The Sweden native leads the Big 12 in stroke average,
taking an average of 74.86 strokes per round. She has four-career
victories,
including a first-place finish at the UCLA Bruin Classic and the Big 12
Championship this spring. Bodn has six top-five finishes this season,
and
has finished in the top 20 in 9-of-10 events. Last week, she was named
the
Big 12 Conference's Player of the Year, and proved that she deserved the
honor by winning the Big 12 Championship in a playoff hole. She is
currently
ranked 23rd in the NCAA. Last year, she was named the Big 12
Conference's
Newcomer-of-the-Year.
OSU AT THE REGIONAL TOURNAMENT
Oklahoma State has not fared well since the NCAA began the two-region
process. Since the regionals began in 1993, the Cowgirls have finished
in
the top 10 only once, in 1994. Last season, OSU was in third place after
two
rounds and appeared on pace to assure a spot at the NCAA Championships.
But,
a third-round score of 323, the second worst of the tournament, dropped
the
Cowgirls to 13th and out of NCAA consideration. The only bright spot on
Oklahoma State's participation in the West Regional was in 1994, when
the
Cowgirls finished fourth at the tournament, led by Charlotta Eliasson's
medalist finish. OSU went on to finish 10th at the NCAA Championships
that
year.
PITTS EARNS SECOND CONSECUTIVE CONFERENCE HONOR
Head Coach Ann Pitts, for the second year in a row, was named the Big 12
Conference's Coach of the Year in a vote by the league coaches. This
season,
she led OSU to its 15th conference title and Maria Bodn became the 17th
Cowgirl to win medalist honors at the conference championship. In her 23
years of coaching, the Pitts-led Cowgirls have won 52-of-252 tournaments
competed in, or 20.6 percent off all tournaments entered. Additionally,
OSU
has finished runnerup on 28 occasions, totaling 80 competitions that OSU
has
finished first or second.
FRESHMAN STEPS UP
Following in her predecessors' footsteps, Swedish freshman Emma
Zackrisson
has played well in her first collegiate season. Her top performance was
at
the Shootout at the Legends, where her season-best 221 strokes were good
enough for sixth place. She also shot her best round of the season there
with a one-under 71 in the second round. Zackrisson has a 77.10 strokes
per
round average this season.
SENIORS GO OUT IN STYLE
Two Oklahoma State seniors will be playing in their final regional
tournament this week as JoJo Robertson and Lotta Stromlid wind up their
collegiate careers. Between the two, they have seen 86 tournaments,
finished
in the top five 16 times, had 27 top-10 finishes and finished in the top
20
on 38 occasions. Robertson has finished third in three different
tournaments
this season and is currently ranked sixth in the region, while
Stromlid's
best finish was a second-place outing at the BYU/Utah-Dixie Classic. She
also finished fifth at the Big 12 Championships. Robertson was named
first-team All-Big 12, while Stromlid earned second-team all-conference
honors.
TWO NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-BIG 12
Natasha Rowe and Emma Zackrisson, both starters on the 1999 Cowgirl golf
team, were named first-team academic All-Big 12 by the conference
office.
Rowe is a junior majoring in secondary education mathematics, while
Zackrisson is a freshman and undecided on her major at Oklahoma State.
She
also received special recognition for her perfect 4.00 grade point
average.
TWO NOMINATED FOR ALL-AMERICA HONORS
Sophomore Maria Bodn and senior JoJo Robertson were both nominated for
All-America honors, awarded by the National Golf Coaches' Association.
Bodn is ranked 22nd in the latest edition of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf
Rankings, while Robertson is ranked 46th. Both were named first-team
All-Big 12 last week by the conference office.
