STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State Cowgirl basketball today announced the signing on Chantoya Hawkins, a 5-5 point guard from Raytown South High School in Raytown, Mo., a suburb of Kansas City. She is the first player to sign a national letter of intent with OSU this spring, and the second this season as Leah Wahlgren of Salina, Kan., signed during the early period in November.
Hawkins played in the Greater Kansas City All-Star Girls Basketball Classic game last Saturday, and led all scorers with 22 points, including five points, two steals and one assist in the final 31 seconds, propelling Missouri to a 100-96 win over Kansas.
"When I visited Oklahoma State, I felt extremely comfortable with the players and the coaching staff," said Hawkins. "It was like I belonged there."
Hawkins averaged 25.5 points, 2.8 assists and 4.3 steals per game last season for Raytown South, earning first-team all-state honors for her efforts on the court. Her team finished 20-8 last season.
"Chantoya was absolutely the best high school point guard available at the late signing date," said OSU Associate Head Coach Jack Easley. "When I got into the recruiting process with her, I was amazed that she was still available. She has literally torn teams apart single-handedly with her scoring ability. She can also pass the ball extremely well."
After narrowing her college choices down to six, Hawkins chose Oklahoma State over Missouri, Southwest Missouri State, UMKC, Wichita State and Valparaiso.
