STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Cowboy tennis team gained the lead in Region V as they defeated Tulsa 6-1 at the DuBois tennis complex.
"We knew Tulsa was a quality team coming in. They're ranked a few positions behind us. We beat them last year in the NCAAs," head coach James Wadley said. "They have essentially the same team (as last year) and so do we, so we knew that it was going to be a dogfight."
Oklahoma State (13-3) swept all six of the singles matches after losing two doubles matches and the doubles point. Tulsa has not been swept in singles in three years. The tandem of Rob Howarth and Daniel Russo defeated Haydn Wakefield and Vishal Gupta for the only doubles victory, while Gareth Williams and Louie Pranic upset top-ranked Pavel Kudrnac and Martin Dvoracek.
"We beat them (Pranic and Williams) in three sets at the semifinals of the National Indoors at No. 1 doubles, and we knew it was going to be tight today. They got the breaks today and won," Wadley said.
The Cowboys will travel to Austin on Friday to face the Longhorns.
