KANSAS CITY, Mo. - All season long, the Oklahoma State Cowboys have lived and died by perimeter shooting. Thursday in opening round action of the Big 12 Tournament at Kemper Arena, against Baylor, it was the same old story.
In the first half, OSU struggled from the field, finishing 13-of-34 for 38 percent shooting. The Pokes finished 4-of-13 from beyond the three-point line, but still took a 35-21 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.
In the second half, OSU took control over Baylor by firing away, this time on the mark and pushed its lead to as many as 29 points enroute to a first round, 83-57 win over Baylor. OSU finished the second half 8-of-15 from the three-point line and 16-of-33 from the field.
"This team (OSU) has some outstanding shooters and (Adrian) Peterson was just all over the place tonight," said BU coach Harry Miller.
Peterson, playing in his last Big 12 Tournament, finished with 19 points, on 7-of-17 shooting from the field. The senior from North Little Rock Ark., finished 5-of-10 from beyond three-point line.
"I thought we played a good basketball game," said OSU coach Eddie Sutton. "We played much better in the second half and we shot the ball well from three point range."
Along with Peterson, guard Glendon Alexander, getting the start for the injured Joe Adkins, finished with an OSU career high 23 points. The junior guard from Carrolton, Texas., finished 6-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-9 from three-point range. Alexander's previous OSU high was 16 points on two occasions.
"I don't think it's really a break through for me," Alexander said after the game. "My teammates just did a good job of feeding me the ball."
OSU guard Doug Gottlieb even got into the act, hitting one three-pointer during game action and two after the whistle was blown. Gottlieb finished with nine points, 14 assists and six rebounds.
The Pokes wouldn't mind a repeat performance of the Baylor game tomorrow when OSU tangles with OU for the third time this season. Tip-off is set for 2:20 p.m. at Kemper Arena.
"We haven't played well against them," Sutton said after the game. "We need to do a better job of attacking the zone. "But the main thing is hitting the open shots when we have them."
