STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State looks to progress from its toughest game of the year when the Cowboys host Texas-San Antonio, the preseason favorite in the Southland Conference, on Saturday. OSU is coming off a 12-point victory over Wichita State in which the Cowboys had to score the game's last 16 points for the final margin.
OSU-UTSA: The Series
The Cowboys and Roadrunners are meeting for the first time, although OSU
coach Eddie Sutton is 3-0 against Texas-San Antonio with all three meetings
coming when he coached Arkansas. The Cowboys are 20-4 against current
members of the Southland Conference.

OSU Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at OSU and his 30th
year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to the
NCAA Tournament seven times. Sutton currently owns a career record of
637-252 (71.7 percent) overall and is 207-88 (70.2 percent) at OSU. Sutton
is just the seventh coach to reach 600 coaching victories in 28 or fewer
seasons.
Scouting the Roadrunners
Texas-San Antonio continues a long road trip when it visits the Cowboys on
Saturday. UTSA is in the midst of a stretch of eight consecutive road games,
including losses at Kansas State on Monday and at Tulsa on Wednesday. UTSA,
the preseason favorite in the Southland Conference, is coached by former OSU
assistant Tim Carter, who served on Leonard Hamilton's staffs between the
1987-88 and 1989-90 seasons. Junior center Mahcoe Parker is coming off a
season-best 17-point, 11-rebound game against Tulsa, junior forward Ed
Harvey and senior guard Lloyd Williams scored in double figures as well with
13 and 12 points respectively.

Cowboys hang tough, beat regional rival
OSU scored the last 16 points of the game to overcome a late deficit and
escape Wednesday's game with a 68-56 victory over Wichita State. Desmond
Mason scored seven points during the run, including an 18-foot jumper that
rolled around the rim four times before going in and giving OSU a
three-point lead -- its biggest since the 11:32 mark of the first half --
with 2:10 remaining in the game. OSU won despite season lows in field-goal
percentage (39.2), three-point percentage (zero for seven) and rebounds
(33). The Cowboys failed to hit a three-pointer for the first time since a
Jan. 2, 1992, game against Midwestern State (OSU won 85-45) -- a string of
250 consecutive games.
Webber's big game saves OSU from Shocker shocker
While his teammates were shooting 27.5 percent from the field -- a number
that went up with a pair of layups in the final 11 seconds -- Alex Webber
had an excellent night against Wichita State. Webber hit nine of 11
field-goal attempts and scored a game-high 20 points. Currently at 73.3
percent for the year, he appears to be on his way to leading OSU in
field-goal percentage for the second straight year. Webber also reached
double figures in the Cowboys' Nov. 27 victory over North Texas, he scored
12 in that contest. In the past two games, Webber has scored 32 points and
hit 14 of 16 field-goal attempts.
Cowboys roll to victory over North Texas
Oklahoma State scored 13 straight points late in the first half to break
open a competitive game, and the Cowboys went on to record a 103-65 victory
over North Texas on Nov. 27. OSU topped 100 points for the 34th time in
school history and the first time since last Dec. 15, when the Cowboys
defeated Houston Baptist 114-62.
Alexander has understated strong start
Senior guard Glendon Alexander was hot in the season opener against
Appalachian State, scoring 15 points in 21 minutes while hitting five of
eight field-goal attempts and all four of his free-throw tries. After
struggling on the road at Arkansas-Little Rock, he returned to form in last
Saturday's game, scoring a game-high 19 points on eight-of-13 shooting.
Alexander has averaged 13.3 points and hit 63.3 percent of his field-goal
tries in OSU's three home games.
Montonati books yet another double-double
After receiving the first start of his three-year OSU career, senior forward
Brian Montonati battled foul trouble in the season opener against
Appalachian State but finished with his fourth career double-double (10
points, 11 rebounds) despite playing just 20 minutes. Montonati bettered
that effort against Idaho, again scoring 10 points but adding a career-high
13 rebounds. He recorded his third double-double of the year and set a
rebounding career high with his impressive 13-point, 15-rebound night
against North Texas.
Gottlieb continues to dish it out
Senior point guard Doug Gottlieb led the nation last season in assists and
recorded the 13th-best single-season assist total in NCAA Division I
history. Already this year, he is well ahead of his school-record assist
average from last season. Gottlieb has 58 assists in the first five OSU
games of the year, moving him ever-closer to the NCAA's list of the top 25
assist men of all time. With 712 assists in his career, Gottlieb needs 51
more to move into the Division I top 25. His current career average of 7.49
per game ranks 14th in Division I history. Duke's Bobby Hurley holds the
total career assists record with 1,076, and Avery Johnson of Southern set a
remarkable record for career average with 12.00 per game.
Mason scores from everywhere against Trojans
Preseason All-American Desmond Mason's game-high 27-point performance
against Idaho on Nov. 20 included a dunk, three three-pointers, six free
throws and a 9-for-14 shooting exhibition. Against UALR, he was even more
impressive, shooting 10-for-12, hitting four threes and adding two more
dunks in a 28-point outing. Having passed four players on the OSU career
scoring list already this season, Mason now ranks 15th with 1,185 points,
and he needs 12 points to catch Arlen Clark in 14th. He also ranks eighth in
OSU history in rebounds (612).
Jonzen uses size to advantage, burns UALR for 19
6-10 sophomore Fredrik Jonzen took advantage of a small Arkansas-Little Rock
roster and ran the floor well for a 19-point outing Nov. 23 that included a
seven-for-eight shooting night and a career-best five-for-five effort from
the free-throw line. He continued to find the basket against North Texas,
hitting all five of his field-goal attempts and scoring 15 points. The
Swedish native's previous career scoring high had been eight points, and his
perfect night at the line against UALR may signify the end of his charity
woes -- he shot 42.9 percent last year but is at 72.0 percent this season.
Adkins comes to life in second half vs. Idaho
Senior guard Joe Adkins struggled in the opening frame against Idaho, going
scoreless with six field-goal attempts before halftime. But Adkins caught
fire in a big way in the second half and scored 17 points on seven-for-10
shooting from the field and a three-for-five performance from the
three-point arc. Adkins now ranks 29th in OSU history in career scoring (863
points).
OSU hits the boards hard
Bolstered by double-digit performances by Montonati and Williams, OSU owned
a 53-29 rebounding advantage over Appalachian State in the Cowboys' Nov. 19
victory. The 24-carom margin is OSU's biggest in five years. Ironically, the
last time OSU had a bigger edge on the glass was Dec. 2, 1994, when the
Cowboys, on their way to an 85-58 victory, collected 48 rebounds while their
opponents had 20. The foe in that game? Appalachian State, in the only
previous meeting between the schools. OSU also did some impressive
glass-cleaning work against North Texas, pulling down 58 rebounds, the
third-highest single-game performance in school history.
Williams becomes crowd favorite
Freshman forward Andre Williams became a Gallagher-Iba Arena favorite Nov.
17 when he blocked three Global Sports shots in five minutes of exhibition
playing time. He solidified his position as a crowd hero in the America's
Youth Classic. Playing significant time against Appalachian State due to the
foul troubles of Montonati and Fredrik Jonzen, Williams responded with six
points and 10 rebounds in a spirited effort. Williams became the first
freshman in OSU history to record double figures in rebounds in an OSU
season opener. Against Idaho, Williams again tallied six points -- four
coming on a pair of thundering dunks -- and added three blocked shots. He
scored a career-high seven points and pulled down eight rebounds in the
victory over Arkansas-Little Rock.
Up next
After a week off for finals, the Cowboys meet San Diego State on Sunday,
Dec. 12, at The Myriad in Oklahoma City. The Aztecs are coached by former
Michigan boss Steve Fisher, who guided the Fab Five-led Wolverines to a
victory over Eddie Sutton's Cowboys in the 1992 NCAA Tournament second
round. OSU returns home Wednesday, Dec. 15, to face Alcorn State in a 7:05
p.m. game that will be the final contest at Gallagher-Iba Arena before the
new year.
On the air
OSU games will be broadcast on the OSU Radio Network with KWTV's Bill
Teegins handling play-by-play duties and Tom Dirato, OSU coordinator of
radio & TV, providing commentary. Dirato and Teegins are in their ninth year
as the Cowboys' basketball radio team, and Dirato is calling OSU men's
basketball for the 23rd season. The OSU radio network can be accessed
through the Internet (www.okstate.com) or on Teamline. Fans wishing to use
Teamline should call (800) 846-4700 and use team code No. 1750. Use of
Teamline requires a Visa or MasterCard.
Noting the Cowboys
- Sophomore center Jason Keep suffered a left knee injury in the Cowboys'
final exhibition game and missed the first three regular-season games
of the year. Keep returned to the lineup against North Texas, scoring
five points in five minutes in his official OSU debut. He also saw
limited action against Wichita State.
- Tickets are available for the OSU men's and women's basketball doubleheader in Oklahoma City on Dec. 12. The Cowgirls will face Long Beach State at 1 p.m. in the Myriad, and the Cowboys will play San Diego State at 3:30 p.m. For tickets, fans may call Ticket Source at (405) 297-3000 or the OSU ticket office at (877) ALL-4-OSU. Tickets for the Oklahoma City games are $16, $13 and $10. OSU season-ticket holders are encouraged to purchase their tickets through the OSU athletics box office.
Quoting the Cowboys
"The thing that impressed me about our ballclub is that they certainly kept
their poise. In the last four minutes of the game, they hit their free
throws. They didn't turn it over. Their defense was solid. They did a better
job on the defensive boards. They played with a lot of poise and certainly
competed hard. ... I think we learned some things about our ballclub." --
Eddie Sutton following OSU's 68-56 victory over Wichita State on Dec. 1.
"To me, the other team read our scouting report and put a body on Desmond and Brian all the time and seemed to forget all about me. I got lucky, got in the right spot and got a few offensive rebounds and layups. ... After 22 years of my life, I'm finally healthy. I go out there and bang with somebody, and I'm not going to go down that easily. It's taken me awhile, but I feel like I'm finally where I need to be." -- Alex Webber after scoring 20 points against Wichita State.
"I'm not hyping them [OSU], but I watched a lot of tape. I watched them last year as a final-32 team. They have six seniors back from that team, and they're happy with their big kid. That may be one of the best teams that he [Eddie Sutton] has ever had here. He's got a chance to go to the Final Four with that team." -- Wichita State coach Randy Smithson.
"The last game and tonight [Nov. 27], we were all getting easy layups. It sounds bad, but Doug and Joe give me all the assists. It's all layups, and you're supposed to make all layups. I am just happy I'm making them right now. So far, we have played some short teams. Their big men are only 6-6 or 6-7, so it's been really important to dominate inside, and I think we have. Our inside guys are posting up and getting good looks." -- Fredrik Jonzen following his 15-point performance against North Texas.
"The team is starting to come together and play well. We are really pushing the ball well in transition, and obviously, our athleticism is a big plus. Like I said last year, it's easy when you've got guys that can really shoot in Joe and Desmond. You give them an open look, and they are going to make it. A lot of those assists aren't creating anything, it's just standing up there, and they cut you and you just hit them when they're open." -- Doug Gottlieb following his 13-point, 16-assist night against North Texas.
Head Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at his alma mater
with a 207-88 record at the school as well as a 637-252 overall mark in his
30th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to
postseason play in eight of nine years and has won 20 games or more seven
times. Sutton is the 20th coach in Division I history to reach the
600-victory mark, and he is just the seventh coach to reach it in 28 years
or less, joining Denny Crum, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Jerry
Tarkanian and John Wooden.
Only two active coaches (Knight and Tarkanian) rank ahead of Sutton in both victories and winning percentage, and only one other coach -- TCU's Billy Tubbs -- joins OSU's boss in having won coach-of-the-year awards in four different leagues. Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the national tournament. With Sutton and Henry P. Iba among the 600-win club, OSU is one of only three schools -- joining Illinois and Kentucky -- with two coaches among the all-time top 20.

The OSU Athletic Center
Oklahoma State will play its home games in a construction zone this year as
massive Gallagher-Iba Arena renovations get into full swing. Here is a quick

Projected completion date: Dec. 1, 2000
For current construction information, see the "Facility Update" section of OSU's web site (http://www.okstate.com).

Media issues
The 500-ton crane that previously sat in the north parking lot of
Gallagher-Iba Arena was relocated last week to the south side of the arena.
However, contrary to earlier reports in this space, the media pass gate will
remain on the south side of the arena.
